NATO
On April 4, 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was formed to respond to future hostile Soviet, or Cold War, actions. The founding members were: the United States, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. Greece and West Germany would eventually join, while France would withdraw.
