NYSC/NRC Society honours Awani

On a visit paid to the Kaduna State Director, Mr. Awani Adedayo Francis, by the NYSC/Nigerian Red Cross Society Kaduna State co-ordinator, Mr. Nwuko Walter and a host of other Red Crossers on the 6th of june, 2003 led to the highest honour being bestowed on the State-Director. The State-Director was awarded the Patron of the NYSC/NRC Society Kaduna State Detachment in accordance with the tradition of Red Cross to executive heads of any jurisdiction. To demonstrate his preparedness to serve as the Patron, Awani has also registered as an associate member of Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS). This is the highest level of membership in NRCS.
Mr. Nwuko Walter highlighted the objectives of the society and expressed appreciation to the State-Director for the recognition and commendations he has given to the society. In his response, Mr. Francis Awani Adedayo welcomed the NYSC/NRC Society and expressed his recognition of the humanitarian services undertaken by the society for the host community. He implored the society, among other things, not to relent in their efforts of affecting positivelylives of members of the host community.
To seal it up Mr. Walter Nwuko, on behalf of the society, presented the Red Cross T-Shirt and face cap to the State-Director and the NYSC officials present which include HOD CDS, Mrs. Bakka and NYSC staff co-ordinator of NYSC/NRC Society, Mr. Mohammed Taura.

IRD

Integrated Rural Development had always been agenda of NYSC since 1994 but this has gotten an entirely new lease of life with the tenure of the pragmatic Brigadier-Gen Walter Oki.
Speaking to a team of KADCORPS editorial board members, the immediate past Kaduna state- director, Alhaji Sanni Wara said the IRD is to engage rejected corps members with something reasonable throughout the service year.Alhaji Wara said, "... corps members could be assigned.

Abstain from casual sex

Speaking in a workshop to sensitise NYSC corps members in Kaduna state at Arewa House, Kaduna, the state HIV/AIDS Programme Development Project Manager Dr. Ishaya Tanimu made a call to all corps members and the general public to abstain from casual sex. Dr. Tanimu revealed that about 151,000 people were already infected by 1999 in the state.
Corps members were implored to take the war against AIDS to the nooks and crannies of the rural areas and/ or their places of primary assignments.
Dr. Tanimu went further saying that the traditional rulers have been sensitised on the need to support the crusade by educating their sub jects.
The Medical Director of Nursing Home Dr. Paul Dogo, speaking at the same occassion, said it is immoral for people to advertise condoms, since it is not 100 per cent safe, explaining that it only prevents pregnancy by 20 per cent, not the virus. He also explained that the dreaded HIV virus destroys body immune system and renders the body vulnerable to any kind of virus Dr. Dogo advised strongly on the sex ual behaviour of people with multiple sex partners, emphasising that it is highly irresponsible for mothers to give condoms to their daughters while going to school and must be stopped.

Oki fought against NYSC

Brig. General Walter Oki confessed how he participated in a demonstration against the setting up of NYSC, which resulted in the arrest of an army colonel.
This was in the early 70's while he was still studying at the then University of Ife, now OAU. The demonstration was after the National Council on Education summit held in Ife and the idea of starting NYSC was been deliberated on.
The funny aspect was that arrested colonel, Gen. Ogundeko, later turned to be the head of unit Brig. Gen Oki was under.

Kaduna North shows love to the less priviledged

Corps members led by the zonal inspector of Kaduna North, miss Ruth Alabi, donate to the less priviledged school uniforms, bags, pencils, biros, erasers, chalks, excercise books and fairly used clothes. The materials sourced from corps members, corps members' employers and philantropists were donated to L.E.A. maiduguri road and Kaduna State Rehabilitation centre.

Kauru Donates to Charity

Appeal made by the NYSC Kauru L.G.A. zonal co-ordinator, Mr. Andrew Okoronkwo, to corps members yielded good results on thursday 12th Dec., 2002.
He begged that the less priviledged be assisted. Consequently batch 'A' 2002 corps members donated school uniforms, school sandals, books and pencils to Local Government Authority Primary school, Kauru.

Jema'a NYSC in charity service

Corps members in Jema'a local government demonstrate love to the less priviledged by donating educational materials to Aliyu Waziri Primary school, Kafanchan.
