These pictures are a from a
1st degree black belt test at one of the Cheonkido dojangs in PA. The kick
is a jump hook - kick and the testing is viewed
and judged from all angles.
The target is made of cardboard and folded and taped. The price is a walk to the super market and each student shares in the accountability to keep the supply always stocked.
All new students are educated in the art of folding and taping. Larger boxes are cut to a standard measurement for uniformity.
The test is about five hours and starts around 11pm. Most of the people travel from a great distance, anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of driving. We all get to meet the other students from other dojangs and have a great respect for each other.
Test requisite is a combination of kicks, strikes, throws, breaks, and overall performance. There are twelve grades in all and over 650 techniques. It is a tough test and there are numerous repeats.
At the end of the testing is a evaluation of each individuals performance. Comments are made and a class is held for 1 hour. When it's all over it is well worth all the effort, sweat and tears that you put in. All those that travel stay the night and we all go to a Chinese restaurant and enjoy and celebrate our good fortune to be in the Knowledge of the Circle. Ralph Iannucelli
