Update from owner Greg on 5/29/03
Just checking in. Slim is doing great, he is much better with the kids. He is my constant companian. We bought a 1962 Willys Jeep to drive around for the summer. Slim likes to bite in the air at the branches overhead as we drive along. What a goof. I can tell something has changed in him in the last month. He is more aware or something. When we get in the jeep, he gets right up to the key and stares at it waiting for me to turn it, then when it starts, he runs to the back so he can start getting those trees. Of course he is tied to a leash so he can't fall out. At six months he is up to 40 pounds, and not a bit of fat on him. How big are his siblings? He already weighs much more than his parents.

Slim got a taste of sheep this morning. There is a guy on the island that has 4 BC's ( he just got a pup this weekend), and he has a dozen or so sheep to play with. One of his dogs is well trained, so I kept Slim on a leash, and he had Daizy bring the sheep around to us. Slim was great. He hid behind me at first, but then showed real interest. He didn't bark, but he went out to the end of the leash, and followed them as best he could on a leash, he moved slow, and kept his head down, and didn't take his eye off of them. Don, the guy, offered to help me train Slim, and let us come over when ever I want to work by myself whenever I want, when Slim is older, in exchange for feeding the sheep when he is out of town. I have been working on downstay when we are in the house. Wolf runs back and forth trying to entice Slim into rough houseing. I think if he can learn downstay under those conditions, he will be able to do it around sheep. Now I just need to get Wolf to learn downstay. People up here are suprised that Slim is a BC. Even the guy with the sheep didn't know that they came in blue merle.

Slim is doing great. He is up to 18lbs as of last Monday. If he gets over 35lbs I'm sending him back! He is well behaved, and is a good sitter, but down is a little trickyer. He is a bit of an ankle bitter, but we are working on that. The kids love him. Erin (20 months) was a little overwhelmed by him at first, but is warming up. Wolf (4) can't get enough. We tried to hook up with Bill Evans (sheep dog trainer) earlier this week, but couldn't track him down.
Slim has been out on many survey jobs, and goes to the beach at least 3 times a day. Our goal is to meet 2 new dogs and 4 new people a day. He loves to find other dogs to play with, and there are plenty around. At night he spends up to 9 hours in his crate without complaining. I think we have housebreaking down, and tennis balls are great fun. He is a fantastic dog, thank you so much for let us have him.
Sincerely,
Greg
