This is the entire IMPALED NAZARENE interview that appeared in SLAYER 15. Done by Stephen O' Malley! What's happening? - "Nothing!" Nothing at all? - "I have a horrible hangover..." Oh really? What happened? - "Just got wasted, as usual..." That's a surprise coming from you, huh? So how were those festivals in Finland? - "They went fucking well. I was really surprised because the biggest newspaper in Finland gave a excellent review for us, basically they said we were the most entertaining band of the whole festival, it was headlined by fucking DEFTONES and RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, and bands like TRAVIS and all that indie shit. We got the only real Metal fans there. I was first amazed by how the audience reacted; we got a really good reaction. And then we got the review in the newspaper and we were like *Shit, what happened?" That's good, what was the name of that festival? - "It is called PROVINSSI ROCK." What else did you do out there? - "What do we do? Get fucking drunk! Its great when we see each other, it's a big party all the time." Yeah, I know... - "You have been around us so you know what we are like." Unfortunately, but it's good, you guys have been doing this stuff for such a long time so I guess it doesn't really require the cheap graphical aspect. Are you doing more festivals this summer? - "Actually, next week we are playing again, it's the TUSKA FESTIVAL which is the biggest Metal festival in Finland. It has bands like GAMMA RAY, SATYRICON, ONE MINUTE SILENCE and most of the Finnish bands." That's not the MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL is it? - "No, that was last week. And did you hear what happened?" I heard about it before that, that more and more people drown? - "This year it was a new record, 28 people drowned in three days, it's amazing..." How does that happen? - "People get so wasted they drown. I don't know what the hell they do." Where the festival is it is several small lakes, right? - "In Finland at that weekend you have like 7-8 major festivals all over the country. So if some country want to invade Finland it is really the mid summer weekend they should do it, because everyone is so fucking wasted. Russians could just walk into Finland." Has that happened before? - "Ohhh, I don't know." I have been in Finland around July; I went to one festival, (ILOSAARI). You played there like 3 o'clock in the morning. - "It was horrible, I had already passed out twice during that day before we played. And when we had to play it was just like shit." I think the crowd at that show is probably the most intoxicated crowd I seen in my life! - "Welcome to Finland." What else is happening in the band? - "Basically what is going to happen is that we are doing the festival in Finland next week, then we have a two week break before we play a festival in Sweden called DIST 2000. That's with NAPALM DEATH etc. Then it's the last show for Jani (bass), he stops playing live with us. The same with Alexi (lead guitar), he is a band member but he doesn't play live. Jani bails out because of his record company (SOLARDISK). It is clear that we will most likely go on a tour with IMMORTAL in the fall, and that is going to last for a month or so. So Jani said that he was quitting. So we made a deal with him and Alexi. Both will continue as studio members. So both will make music for IMPALED and both will play on the records, but none of them will play live. We are going to start to use session musicians. It works for EMPEROR so why wouldn't it work for us? It is a great relief for me because I thought that we were going to find a new lead guitarist and a bass player. But this is the best solution." Yeah, you don't have to replace them in that sense. Any idea who these session musicians will be? - "When we toured in France we used the guitarist from THY SERPENT, a really great guitarist. Alexi thought him all the solos' and he learned them immediately. So we have used him, but there are shitload of guitarists and bass players out there." Jani released that split "7 with you and DRILLER KILLER, how did that come around? - "In November '98 we were on tour with DRILLER KILLER and RITUAL CARNAGE. We loved the DRILLER KILLER music and they loved the IMPALED NAZARENE music. So we come to this conclusion that we should do this split EP. We wanted to do a split EP because we never done a split EP before. And we wanted a EP picture disc because we haven't done that either, so we killed two birds with one stone." It is a cool release. A split "7 picture disc doesn't come around often, especially not with new music. A lot of times it is just a re-release of something that has been released on standard formats before. But having a new release like this is really good. He has a good label I think. - "He is releasing strange shit!" |
