By Chuck Zakarian w/ Jean (John) Wounan
Wutas are not flown hungry as with other performing
breeds. The loft door is opened for the birds to come to the ground. Then
they are given some feed. You then take your stick and walk 4 to 5 birds
from the group. These are made to fly by tapping the stick to the ground
behind them.
The very best Wutas climb in a vertical spiral to gain
altitude. When they level their flight, the signal is given (making the
dropping flutter). The Wutas will then lock back their wings like a falcon
and dive to the ground in front of the loft. The very best stop their dive
8 to 6 feet from the ground. Then they are given more feed.
This process is repeated over and over. With Wutas, the hens are even "birdy". To quote Jean:
"Wutas are bred
to dive. It is in their blood like rolling is in a Roller's blood. You
make a Damascene or a Dewlap dive, but a Wuta is born to dive."
When I was at Jean's, I saw the equiviliant of a rolldown.
The Wuta did not break its dive and drilled itself into the ground. I have
also seen this in Doneks. This is another
breed that is born to dive.
