Pitfall Harry was introduced to the videogame world more than two decades ago in an amazingly successful game for the Atari 2600, Pitfall. If you had that system, you more than likely owned a copy of this green Activision cartridge. During the retrogaming craze of the early 90s, Activision revisited its huge property, sending him into the more daunting world of 16-bit with Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure. While not as popular as his debut adventure, the game spawned editions on the SNES, Genesis, and Atari Jaguar systems – and now Majesco's scored this adventurer for a launch title on the Game Boy Advance.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure will more or less be a direct conversion of the versions released more than a half-decade ago. The portable run will put our hero Harry in the same 10 worlds of the previous editions, where he'll have to run, jump and vine-swing through the dangerous Amazon. The point? Treasure, my friend. It's all about the fortune and glory, and you'll have to collect gold, silver, gems, and priceless artifacts to earn it.

The game mimics the classic Atari game with the familiar snakes, crocodiles, and scorpions, while adding a few elements all its own. Do you remember bungee jumping and riding minecarts in the original? How about using a sling to take out your enemies...remember that? Neither do we, but these are some of the things you'll have to do to get through the tough levels in the adventure

The one thing I was hoping for and I'm unfortunately not going to get it – Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure on the consoles tucked away an emulated version of the original Atari 2600 Pitfall. For whatever reason, Majesco was unable to include the retro game in the Game Boy Advance. A shame -- it was a great addition in the past versions, and it will be missed in the portable edition.

Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure will hit the shelves day and date with the Game Boy Advance in the US – June 11, 2001. All we need now is a Pitfall game that brings back Quickclaw.
