Self-Tanners

Many dancers now use self-tanner on their legs for competitions. Personally, I love this look, as long as your face is tanned too. It makes your legs contrast quite nicely with the poodle socks and the dress. But, everyone has different opinions on this. My sister hates self-tanner.
However, if you do want to start using tanner, here are some instructions:

Legs

1. Start off my shaving and exfoliating your legs (*****HINT*****Do this the day before you want to apply tanner to avoid spotty legs where the tanner went into your newly shaved pores) And I would suggest applying tanner the night before your competition. Or if you want a darker look by applying more than one coat, start applying two days early

2. Moisturize your legs well

3. Take the self tanner - My favorite is Neutrogena Self-tanning foam in Extra-Dark - and squirt a bit into the palm of your hand

4. Starting with your lower legs and working your way up, massage it into your skin very well. Keep rubbing it in even when you think there's none left on your hands

5. When applying to your knees, use sparsely. The skin there is thicker and absorbs the tanner too well. Rub in well

6. Make sure you get the backs of your legs equally as well as the front

7. Wash your hands VERY well immediately afterwards - especially watch out for between the fingers....don't want orange palms or fingers the next day

Face

- There are a few different options for tanning your face:

1. Take some of the tanner you used on your legs, squirt it on your palms, mix around, then apply to face, massaging in well

2. Use a special tanning lotion specifically for face

3. Don't apply any tanner, but use a lot of bronzer when you put on your makeup

On my face I usually just use a lot of bronzer instead of an actually tanner, and that's because for some reason my skin always breaks out if I use self-tanner on my face. I'm not sure if it does that to most people....or what. I do have really sensitve skin, though, so that could be why.

Makeup

Here are some tips on how to apply makeup

1. Wash your face, and pat dry

2. Apply moisurizer to your face and neck

3. Put on concealer first - in a dotting motion, to cover any blemishes, or red spots. (I personally prefer a liquid concealer, because I find it covers better) Also apply concealer to your eye lids

4. Next, depending if this is a big show, under bright lights, a feis, or just a small dance-out...decide if you need foundation. Find a shade that matches your skin, and smooth over your face with a make-up sponge. Apply a loose power over top.

5. If you skip the liquid foundation, go for a powder foundation, or pressed powder. You don't have to be quite as worried about it matching your skin perfectly if you go the powder-only route.

6. Next, highlight your face....take out that bronzer, and dust over the bottom of your cheekbones - in highest concentration - but also across forehead, chin, and a little on the nose (basically, anywhere the sun would touch)

7. Then take a peach or rose colored blush - depending on what would best match your skin tone - and brush over the tops of the cheekbones.

1. First off, if your eyebrows need shaping, do that before the performance day. No need to have puffy red eyes from plucking or waxing

2. If you have unruly eyebrows, use a bit of clear mascara on them for a tidier look

3. If your eyebrows are really light colored, or have been overplucked recently, touch them up with some eye brow makeup or eye liner the shade of your eyebrows. Personally, I would say go for the eye liner method, because eyebrow makeup tends to be oily - unless you use the powder kind....your choice

4. Now that your eyebrows are ready, time for the eyes...start by curling your eyelashes with an eyelash curler if you'd like. (They take some time to learn how to use, so if you aren't used to one, skip this step)

5. Then take out the eyeshadow. You need two shades. One pale, shimmery one. And one darker, or bronze one. Normally, you'd pick shades that best matches your skin, eyes, ect. But for Irish dancing - well, a feis in your solo dress - pick a color that looks good on you, and matches your costume. If your dress has blue or purple in it...those are good choices.

6. Take the pale, shimmery one, and apply on the lid and upper eye, up to the brow. You can apply a little bit in a thin line under the eye on the outer half as well for a nice effect

7. Take the darker one and apply along the bone just above the lid, making it thicker on the outer part...see picture below

8. Next take black eye liner, and apply to the upper lid, extending past the outer corner in a little tail

9. You are supposed to put regular liner or Kajal liner on the bottom too...but it makes my eyes look weird, so I personally don't. But if you do, start about halfway under your eye and draw outwards.

10. Take black mascara - unless you have blonde eye lashes, then take dark brown - and apply to your lashes in a side-to-side motion working from the base of the lashes to the ends, for added thickness. You can apply more than one coat after each has dried for a more full effect. For some reason, if I put on more that one though, my eye lashes look clumpy...

1. Put plain chap stick on your lips to start

2. Choose a neutral lip liner, or one the color of your lipstick.

3. Apply it to the outer edge of your lips....not the sides of your mouth, that looks tacky

4. For better lipstick hold, fill in lip liner on your lips as well

5. Put the main lipstick color on....bright pink looks a little fake, red is too harsh. Put something bright on, but a neutral-pink shade is best....it should match your dress

6. Blot off the extra on your lips by pressing your mouth on a piece of tissue

7. Put some lip gloss over top of the lipstick for extra shine
