Chalk up
your cue, billiard fans. Ascii is set to
release Backstreet Billiards, one of the
most in-depth pool simulators ever seen
on the PlayStation.
Backstreet
Billiards has many different ways to
play. First is the Story mode, where you
assume the role of a lone pool player out
to find out who stole his deceased
father's coveted pool cue. You'll talk to
barflys and hustlers across the city,
playing different games of pool to earn
their respect and get answers to the
mystery.
But if
this little roleplaying isn't your cup o'
tea, you can always jump into any one of
the many different game modes. Standard
games like Eight and Nine Ball, Rotaton,
One Pocket. And the unique style
Bowlliards, Cut Throat, One Pocket and
5-9. You can even set up trick shots to
impress your friends. Up to four players
can get in on the action, too, depending
on the style of play.
Obviously,
one of the most important aspects of pool
simulations is how well it can portray
the physics of all the balls whacking
into each other, bouncing off the
cushions, and falling into the pockets.
From what we've seen, Backstreet
Billiards has a very elaborate physics
engine. Players can add english to their
shots for curves, and even pop the ball
off the table for some tricky maneuvers.
The 3D engine enables players to view
shots from virtually any angle, and watch
the action at 60 frames per second.
