Big Sister-2936m(9,632Ft.)

Note for May 26, 01: - I climbed Big Sister with the Alpine Club of Canada (Central Alberta Section). We started the climb at about 8:30 A.M. The trail is in the trees for about an hour then leads to a 5 meter down-climb. From there it ascends the giant southwest slope towards the ridge. Once the ridge is gained you follow it to a 10 m down-climb then skirt around the pinnacal on the left side. We used ropes and pro for this part, which made it alot safer. The summit has great views. We were at the summit at 3:30. The rock on descent is really bad. Even so, this is my favorite scramble so far.

Dates Summited -May 26, 01(Kyle)

Elevation -2936m(9,632Ft..)

Elevation Gain - 1200m

Location - Canmore

May 26, 01- Here is the route we took. The red line outlines the route. I don't think the summit is visible in this picture, but it is just beyond this. As you can see, there was hardly any snow on the scramble route. For being the end of May that is sort of weird. But I'm not complaining!

May 26, 01- Here am I ascending the long slope that leads to the ridge. This slope is long and the rock is crappy going up and coming down (Scree on top of slab). Although, there were a few short spots of just slab or scree.

May 26, 01- Here am I descending the 10 meter downclimb. This is located right before you traverse the slope described in Kanes book. We had the right gear and enough time, so we decided to set up a rope that would help us down the cliff. Better safe than sorry!

May 26, 01- After we climbed down the cliff we were faced with this traverse, which still had some snow left on it. We decided to rope up. The route we followed was the line of snow that extends right next to the pinnacle of rock on the right.

May 26, 01- Here is a picture of me ascending the 50 degree slope described in "Scrambles." This was the most fun part of the climb in my mind. This was my first time roping up so I was really excited. I am glad we brought a rope, because a slip here would have resulted in a painful tumble, falling hundreds of meters down the mountain!

May 26, 01- Here is our group on the slope. Some parts of the slope got a little tricky. If you do this scramble before the snow has melted, bring an ice axe and maybe some rope and pro if you don't feel comfortable.

May 26, 01- Here is Mt. Sparrowhawk from the summit of Big Sister. I have hopes of climbing Sparrowhawk later on in the season after everything has melted.

May 26, 01- Here we have Mt. Assiniboine (Center) and surrounding peaks from the summit. Assiniboine is a mountain I hope to climb in the future, in a couple of years. It is the seventh tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies and stands at 11,870 Feet. It is known as "The Matterhorn of the Canadian Rockies," because of it's shape, size and beauty.

May 26, 01- Here I am on the summit of Big Sister. It has a great view because it's the biggest mountains around Canmore and has a good location. This has been my favorite scramble yet. I really enjoyed it.

May 26, 01- Here is the Central Alberta Section of ACC. I am fourth from the right. This was my first climb with these guys and had an excellent time. There were ten of us from ACC and we ran into two other people on the trail. It started to cloud over a bit once we got onto the summit. We all had a great day.
