Note for March 14, 04: - Went with Colin S. Our plan was to hike part way up on Saturday night, then bivy and hike to the summit on Sunday. We got to Canmore at 9:00 P.M. and found the trailhead at 10:00. After following ground that was too flat to be going up Grotto we realized that we took a wrong turn somewhere and set the tent up 15 minutes from the car.

We started on the right trail on Sunday at 10:30. The trail through the trees and up to treeline is generally free of snow and had us breathing hard. We got to treeline after 2:15 hours of hiking. The snow got worse above treeline. In some spots it was waist deep plus wind and verglas. We followed the ridge for another two hours. At 4:00PM we were still at least another 30 mins from the summit and with the headlamp in the car we turned around. We were back at treeline by 5:15, then back at the car by 6:15. Even though we didn't summit, it was still a nice scramble and the snowy conditions spiced it up a bit.

Our campsite Saturday night.

Colin hiking up still below treeline. It is probably about 1000m height gain from the trailhead to the start of the ridge.

Blue skies and jet trails

Hiking up to the false summit. The ridge was corniced on the opposite side. Here the snow is better than other parts of the ridge.

Looking up the the summit from where we turned around. It was at least another half hour to the top and we were running out of daylight.

Colin trying to catch some Z's.

Looking back along the ridge.

It's getting cold

Colin on the descent.
