Mt. Kidd - 3450m(11,319Ft.)

Note for June 1, 01: - We attempted Mt. Kidd with a friend from the local mountain club named David. The weather was pretty good when we left the parking lot at 11:30. After going past the waterfalls and ascending into the bowl the weather started clouding over and slightly raining. Because of our late start we experienced large rockfall and snow melt. We ended up calling it quits at about 3:00 P.M.

Note for April 24, 05: - Managed to crawl up Kidd North on Saturday. I'm just starting a framing job, getting 2 days off a week if I'm lucky, so I took the opportunity to get out. We drove out of RD at 7am and made it to the approach trail by 10:30. We sould have made the drive in 3 hours but we stopped off in Cochrane to pick up a six pound box of drink mix.

There is alot of avalanche debris past the waterfall indicating that the bowl is fairly safe and has had a major slide. The first half of the bowl was all snow and easy to ascend. The last half is loose scree with the odd snow patch. The glissade down from the summit was pretty good, but the snow is still soft in places, making your body sink in too far.

So, why did Colin carry 6 pounds of drink mix to the summit? Not only did we have some snow cones, but the local radio station is giving away two Harley Davidsons and a one month trip to Australia to someone who makes a sign advertising the two companies. The radio station picks the best 100 signs that get submitted, then they do a draw for the winner. So we drew the harley and Z 99 symbols on the summit, took a few pics, and if all goes well, we'll soon be rolling to the mountain in style!

June 1, 01- When you take off from the parking lot you follow a trail that leads to a creek bed after 20 minutes. After ascending the creek you are faced with this view. Here is the route as it passes the waterfalls and turns into the lower bowl. The scrambling near the waterfall is nothing to worry about. Since we climbed this on a fairly warm day the run off from the snow in the bowl was ample, maybe later in the season the creek wouldn't even exist! Regardless, the route never comes in contact with it.

June 1, 01- Here is what the bowl looks like from above the falls. We followed the snow for a while, then started on the rock. Because of the heat of the day there was alot of snow melt. The snow melt started causing rockfall from up above us. Some were as big as large bowling balls. We decided it would be safe if we turned around cause we didn't have any helmets on us.

June 1, 01- Here is Ian (Left) and Kyle (Right) ascending the snow slope in the bowl. This part was really fun. Glissading down was a riot. I would definitely like to try this mountain again but start in the early morning.

Looking up once again to the lower drainage of Kidd.

Taken above the waterfall at the base of the upper bowl. An interesting unnamed snow/ice line lies behind on the cliffs.

Stirling rambling up some chossy rock

Summit views towards the Assiniboine area

Colin and the transmitter on the summit. There happened to be two golf clubs on the summit, but I left my balls at home. Maybe next time

Our ticket to Aussieland

The bowl took about 3 hours to ascend and 45 mins to glissade down.
