Platypus
Here is the best picture we could get of the platypus
at feeding time. These creatures are not as big as you may think.
They are only about one foot long. There is a small claw on one
of the hind webbed feet that has a venom. This, however, is not
for protection. It is for fighting other platypi during mating season.
David Fleay actually got stung by one of these early in his travels
and nearly died. Fortunately he survived and led a life of beauty
finding many antivenoms for Australian snakes. There are accounts
of Early European settlers amputating their limbs because of the
pain that a little whack from these guys can inflict. Pretty serious
little claw this guy has.
