Kenpo emerged as the core around which this new art was built.
Although uncredited by name, other influences included American Boxing and Escrima and Arnis.
From its beginnings, Kenpo was an eclectic and adaptive art. As time has passed, Kajukenbo has continued to change and evolve.
Currently, there are a few distinct, "recognized" branches of Kajukenbo: Kenpo ("Emperado Method" or "Traditional Hard Style"), Tum Pai, Chu'an Fa, Wun Hop Kuen Do, and Gaylord Method.

Chuan Fa is one of the oldest forms of martial arts. Around two thousand years old, Chuan Fa is an art based on ancient Chinese technique that have recently been assimilated into what is now know in modern day as mixed martial arts or ju jitsu. Much of this system of fighting can be found in the current more popular arts such as ju jitsu, escrima, mixed martial arts, grappling and close quarter combat.
Because it was originally a system that was used by monks, the system relies upon the use of ones own body and the surrounding environment rather than concealed or non-concealed weapons. Brute force is not a requirement but training is vigorous and physically intense.
Students strive to develope timing, coordination, balance, physical fitness, and mastery of the laws of physics and nature as they apply to self defense and interpersonal conflict.
