Pallotta TeamWorks, which formerly organized bike rides to fund charity AIDS groups, has closed its doors. The Los Angles-based company shut down and laid off more than 250 employees. The group had been plagued by complaints from charity groups that said they had not received all the money they had expected from the bike rides. Pallota started up in 1994 with the first California AIDS Ride. Last year, the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center and the San Francisco AIDS Foundation ended partnerships with Pallota - claiming the company was wasting too much money on excessive self-promotion.

Michelle Dumaresq, the first transgendered cyclist for Team Canada, is being told to give up the fight to be treated as a woman in the sport. Renee Richards, a former tennis star who became a woman in 1975, thinks Dumaresq should throw in the towel. Dumaresq is currently riding for Team Canada - though her racing license was initially revoked following complaints from other cyclists.
Richards told the National Post that she believes Dumaresq is in a 'no-win' situation. She believes that Dumaresq will never be accepted as a woman by other cyclists and should just give up trying.
The International Cycling Union is currently allowing Dumaresq to ride as a woman. However, some of her teammates have filed official complaints to have her removed from the team or forced to compete in a seperate category from the women.
Nancy Drolet, a former member of the Canadian Women's Hockey Team has come out publicly as a lesbian. Not only that, but she got hitched too! Drolet was united with her partner, Nathalie Allaire in a civil ceremony last week in Quebec. Drolet was cut from the Canadian team just before the Salt Lake City Olympics.
"We decided in 1995 to spend the rest of our lives together," Drolet said. "The union is a legal document that will free us from future constraints. We adore children, and like any new couple, we think about having them, but not necessarily tomorrow morning."
Former San Diego Padre outfielder Billy Bean is knee deep in trouble after a cameo role on HBO's Arli$$. Bean quit Major Legue Baseball in 1995 and came out as gay in 1998. On the show, Bean tells a gay athlete to 'stay in the closet' to protect his career. Bean's choice to play the part has created controversy from gay sports fans who question his actions. However, Bean told the Miami Herald he was just ``trying to give people a realistic image of what would happen on July 21, 2002 . . . for someone coming out.'' He added, ''Overnight, [New York Mets catcher] Mike Piazza wouldn't be able to play at a certain level, if he was gay.''
