Information on stamps and covers

Printing Details
The stamps are printed in one colour per year onto white gummed paper. In 1988 the colour was blue, in 1989 red and 1990 purple.

The designs change each year, and normally include local and scout related subjects and themes.

In 1988 five designs were used and printed in a strip of five stamps with christmas designs. In 1989 six designs were used, and printed in a block of varying sized stamps, to represent a window.

In 1990 the style was changed to represent local sites. The first being the old Town Hall frontage. The design was spread over 6 stamps of varying sizes. In order to fully appreciate the design, two sets per sheet were produced as a miniature sheetlet, to be used specifically on the first day covers. The designs were created by J A Wilson.

For the first time in 1990, due to pressure of time for delivery, covers from two bulk users of the service were processed as "Bulk" mail, handstamped but no label used. This service was not available to the general public.

In 1991 the designs were of scouts delivering letters and the possible problems involved, given a light-hearted approach by a new designer D Rowbottom. They were printed in red on white paper,

In 1992 the designs were based on Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book characters used by Cub Scout organisers, and were printed on green paper.

By 1993 Mr D Rowbottom had become our resident designer. He produced a range of designs on triangular and diamond form. These are all scouting themes and assemble into a large triangular design. These designs provided us with some headaches in layout, in printing and in separation, however we feel that the overall effect is well worth the problems. Again these were printed on green paper.

We are particularly proud of our 1994 issue of wildlife which were produced in spite of a local burglary in which the computers and all files pertaining to the issue were stolen. These stamps are printed in a strip, with a slightly reduced design for the miniature sheet. These were printed on white paper.

In 1995, due to a variety of reasons, the size of the operation had to be curtailed, far fewer stamps were to be used and the service was restricted to a smaller delivery area. For this reason, it was decided to overprint stamps from earlier issues, 1988 for normal stamps and 1989 for miniature sheets. Each stamp was overprinted '1995' in red (black in the case of miniature sheets).

In 1996 the smaller distribution area was continued. Stamps were similar to the 1995 issue but overprinted 1996.

For 1997, the original issues were again overprinted, this time by 1997 in multiple colours.

The 1998 issue was again an overprint, but this time was also uprated to 15p to take account of the change in normal postal rates.

Scout & Cub Design Prizes

In each of the early years, approximately 6 sheets of stamps were printed on an alternative colour gummed paper. These were not available to the public and were printed to produce special First Day Covers to be presented to scouts and cubs as prizes in the stamp design and other competitions. Total numbers issued therefore are a MAXIMUM of 30 or 36 for each year. Issued cover numbers are usually in single figures in most years.

The colours for each year are as follows :-
1988 - blue
1989 - blue
1990 - 50% blue / 50% beige
1991 - beige
1992 - white
1993 - white
1994 - blue
1995 - none issued.
1996 - none issued
1997 - none issued
1998 - none issued

Varieties

1988 - The stamp designs were produced on a computer and the sheets assembled on the computer. Each design has a common size value, except for one Santa stamp per sheet which has a large '12p'.

1989 - During the assembly of the sheets one of the stamps in this issue had a Christmas tree omitted from the design. This was not noticed until the sheets had been printed. Therefore one in six of the sets contains a "missing tree" variety.

1993 - Due to the style of these designs, layout was a problem. This led to two of the stamp designs, being available 'tete-beche'. These were available as a set of two pairs mint, and a very small number of FDC's of the pairs were produced (55 only).

All these stamps were used normally, but it means that first day covers with this variety are quite scarce, particularly the 1988 perforated issue. Mint stamps with the variety are available only in the block of six as issued.

Enquiries and orders for all these issues should be sent to :-
