Butterflies and Moths

Butterflies and Moths

The mixed habitats found at Stockwood open space offer both excellent feeding and breeding conditions for butterflies and moths. Moth numbers are hard to establish due to their nocturnal habits but recent surveys have included both local and national rarities. Butterflies are generally easier to survey and quantify with a total of 23 species recorded over recent years. These include large numbers of Marbled White , Meadow Brown ,both common Skippers and day-flying Burnet moths liking the summer flower meadows. Rarer finds include Clouded Yellow (below) and Green Hairstreak.
