Insect Life

A recent invertebrate study recorded 182 species of which 11 were national rarities.
I've tried to list a few below



Dragonflies and Damselflies

Species found on the reserve
  • Emperor Dragonfly
  • Southern Aeshna
  • Broad-bodied Chaser
  • Common Darter
  • Azure Damsel
  • Large Red Damsel (above left)
  • Blue-tailed Damsel (above right)


Grasshoppers and Crickets

In the summer months the meadows of the reserve are alive with the sounds of Grasshoppers and Crickets , below are the species you will commonly encounter. These include the Long-winged Conehead , a recent addition to many British grasslands due to it's range extending in a northerly direction from France. This is possibly a physical sign of global warming taking affect

Bees and Wasps
