PURSUIT SPECIAL (MAD MAX
2)
This is a mirror image of the original picture, as
it is easier to view max's car with it on this side of the frame otherwise
you would have to scroll across to see it.
Max's Pursuit Special:
This list concerns the construction of the Pursuit
Special that Max drove in Mad Max 2 aka The Road Warrior. This page does
not cover every aspect such as base car as that is all mentioned in the
Mad Max 1 section, this page just covers the changes and modifications
to the vehicle. If something isn't mentioned then it hasn't changed from
the previous movie. If you have additional information that you would like
to add please e-mail
me. Any of the below links with
next to them means i need information urgently, any links with *
next to them means i need that part. So if you can help out with either
sections please e-mail
me.

MONZA
FRONT END
-
For a more in-depth explanation of the Monza nose cone see Mad Max 1 section.
The only modification to the monza nose cone in Mad Max 2 was the removal
of the Air damn section, that being the section from below the bumper down.
That also means that the indicators were removed as well. They did this
to give the car a more battered look from putting up with the harsh climate
and terrain of the "Waste Lands". If you wish to get technical you could
also say that the whole monza nose cone was removed except for the supporting
frame. This is because the nose cone only last about 3 minuets into the
film before it is crashed off.
BOOT SPOILER
-
In Mad Max 2 the boot lid (trunk in the US), rear windscreen, back seat
and a few other items are removed to make way for the two large fuel tanks.
In removing the boot lid the middle section of the boot spoiler is taken
away as well. If anyone plans on using the large fuel tanks in there car
then they should consider using a modified Holden Monaro 3 piece spoiler's
side pieces in favour of the cobra item. The Holden spoiler looks more
like the Pursuit Specials than the cobra but would require some modifications
to get it to fit properly as well as look right, where's the cobra item
would fit nearly straight on with little modifications to look right.
I do not know of anyone selling this spoiler, so the most replica's
have been using the Cobra 3 piece spoiler in its place. If anyone has any
good reference photos or info please e-mail
me.
FUEL
TANKS & CAPS
-
In Mad Max 2, two large fuel tanks were cut into the boot (trunk in the
US), of the Pursuit Special which required removal of the boot lid, back
seat, rear window ect. These tanks are a bit of a mystery as to what they
are from or even if they are custom made. If anyone knows anything at all
about these tanks PLEASE E-MAIL
ME.
-
Fortunately
(thanks to George Kritty) we know what the Fuel tank caps are off, and
that is old english double decker bus'. The fuel caps appear to fit pretty
well to the fuel tanks so maybe they go hand in hand. If anyone has any
additional information please e-mail
me.
DRIVE LINE
SUPERCHARGER
This is a picture of the Mad Max 2 Pursuit Special after the filming
of the movie where it passed hands a few times.
-
The supercharger in Mad Max 2 was just a plain old
GM 6/71 unit. It was still a twisted vane, Roots style superchargers that
was not functional. Once again the supercharger case was empty, it was
held above the induction manifold by 4 brackets, and the carburettor sat
slightly inside the supercharger case. A water pump was attached to the
front of the SC. to hold the supercharger drive pulley, this also moved
the drive belt far enough forward to clear the factory 351c water pump
and assembly. The distributors angle has also been changed by a 90 degrees
as to let it clear the SC.
It is
said that the supercharger was driven by an electric motor but if you have
a look at the above picture and the one to the left it opens up a few other
possibilities. If you look at the picture you will see that the supercharger
belt runs from the supercharger down to a pulley, at the front of the pulley
is what seems to be a smaller one running a belt the same as most fan belts
on cars. The smaller belt appears to go straight down where the crank would
be. This means that the smaller belt could have been driven by the crank
and the engaged by a electronic clutch (similar to that found on air conditioner
compressor), or by a electronic motor as first believed. One way to be
sure is to watch the movie and try to see whether the supercharger speeds
up and slows down corresponding with the RPM of the engine, if so it is
pretty clear that the supercharger was driven by the engine, and turned
on and off by an electronic clutch either mounted on the crank or was designed
into the two pulleys of different size meet.
I have currently lent my tape to a fried, so could someone watch the film
and let me
know if the supercharger speeds up or slows down, i am also going to
attempt to e-mail "Car's of the Stares Museum", to see if they could have
a peek under the bonnet to confirm where the smaller belt goes.
FUEL
INJECTION SYSTEM
-
In Mad Max 2, the attractive Scott Super Slot was replaced by a custom
imitation item. I guess they could not come up with the proper item or
could not get enough of them to make the few Pursuit Special vehicles used
in the movie.
WHEELS
These are the wheels that are on the restored Pursuit Special.
-
In Mad Max 2 it appears that the Pursuit Special
that has been restored's, wheels remained the same from mad max 1, but
the second car they built for the blow up scene and many other shots in
the movie, used different rear wheels. The wheels used are the same basic
style as the other vehicle except it had a lot more spokes on the back
rims. This can clearly been scene when they show the Pursuit Special upside
down just after it has rolled down the hill, when Todie is checking the
tanks and a few other scenes in the movie like when the car approaches
the Jyrocopter.
These rims are the ones used on one of the vehicles used in Mad Max
2. Left: front wheel design (same as Mad Max 1), Right: rear wheel design
(notice the increase in spokes).
TIRES
EXHAUST
SYSTEM
Notice the far right pipe is sooty one where's all the others are
clean as a whistle, mmmmmmm i wonder how many of these out lets are functional???
-
The out lets for the exhaust gasses are Zoomy pipes
in Mad Max 1, but in number 2 they are removed in favour of just plain
exhaust pipes with no flaring or the tip cut off at a angle. This adds
to the cars beaten up look, the director was after.
-
The mufflers stayed the same consisting of Glass
packs and "straight" pipes.
INTERIOR
BLOWER
SWITCH
-
The switch on Max's Pursuit Special used to engage and disengage the Blower
(Supercharger) is two speed rear end switch (gear divider) of a truck.
They can be purchased from Repco, and a few other companies as well as
your local truck wrecker's. As far as i know the bracket used to hold the
switch to the selector lever can only be bought from truck wreckers. If
you intend on buying one take in a picture as there are a few different
designs. For a heap more information see 5.7
Interceptor's page on the Blower Switch.
LOW
FUEL WARNING LIGHT
In Mad Max 2 fuel was a precious substance even more than in Mad Max 1,
and with a supercharger sitting on the bonnet it made scenes to add a warning
light it the fuel got to low. The light used is nothing fancy its just
a after market brake light for trailers ect. I don't know about outside
of australia but in australia these lights are the most common trailer
ect. light used. They are available from any service station or car parts
dealer's for as cheap as 10 dollars. They can also be purchased in yellow
for indicator use. It appears from the picture below that the light and
maybe the gauge was held on by a hose clamp mounted around the steering
column.
This is a good picture as it shows how big the fuel gauge really
is. In the movie it only looks a fraction of the size.
FUEL GAUGE
-
The Fuel level Gauge as seen in Mad Max 2, was a
non functional item custom built for the movie by Dobros Gauges.
George Kritty (a fan and replica builder)
spent
a lot of time going to places in search of the gauge once manufactured
by Dobros. One guy knew another and from that guy George was told of a
person (who insists he wishes to remain anonymous) who might be able to
help. As luck had it, he confirmed he had some but only in components.
George then had the job of searching through all his boxes gathering a
piece here and a piece there until they successfully found enough parts
to account for 7 units. The owner then added the numbers and red zone onto
the dial face. It was George's job to add the word 'Litres' and to fabricate
a bracket since there weren't any left. The owner has priced the gauges
at $160.00 plus postage and handling.
There are only a couple left but there is still has a few boxes to
search through (if anyone's lucky).
The gauge itself was a SS476 type (flush mount) used for measuring
gas/oil/water pressures. So although they were meant for industrial applications,
George has recreated the gauges using original and authentic components
manufactured by Dobros just for exact looks. Dobros changed there name
to Dobbie and were later bought out by another company. These gauges have
been obsolete for years, and there will never be anymore found.
-SOLD-
The gauges that were up for sale
from George are all but sold out, i was lucky enough to get the very last.
If you are interested in purchasing one contact
George
Kritty, I can not guarantee he has any left. The price is a reasonable
$160 + P&H Australian, the gauge you receive is identical to
the one in the movie.
DOOR
SEAT
-
In Mad Max 2 the left hand side front seat was removed in favour of a fibreglass???
seat mounted with its back facing down, on the left door frame. This seat
is not a the baby seat optioned with XB Falcons (unless modified) as the
picture below is the Motor Craft item that was on the option's list, and
they are different. The seat could off course could be a baby seat of different
make or could be from something totally different even custom made. If
anyone has any ideas about this seat please e-mail
me.
