Why Melfina Undresses?
Big thanks to the "Galactic Leyline," (an awesome website) because that is where I got this information.

The XGP15A-II more commonly known as the Outlaw Star is the most advanced ship in the galaxy. It was built using the brains and technology of both the Space Forces and Pirates. It's soul purpose is to reach the Galactic Leyline. Gillium, the ship's main computer can run all aspects of the ship except those pertaining to navigation. Gene and Jim handle the general piloting, but the average mind isn't able to handle the immense amounts of navigational information required to steer a modern space ship. This is where Melfina's role comes in. The entire Navigational System is Melfina, who handles everything relating from navigation to sensing the malfunctions of the engines. But even a Construct would have a hard time if they had to use a common computer screen. And of course, being the XGP, all systems on-board are the most advanced in the galaxy. So Melfina uses a special device that requires her to strip down and enter a tank. Why? Because it helps her interface with the system. Electrical signals conduct best through liquid mediums (thus the tank). Her having contact with this would mean the rate of information transmission is much faster than if she was merely typing away at a computer screen.

A worthy comparison would be fiber optic cable as opposed to a phone modem. The optic cable sends information as pulses of light. Light and electricity are both similar forms of energy. Light can be translated into electricity much easier than the analog signals sent over the phone wire. The human brain thinks in electrical pulses. A computer screen uses pictorial symbols. For information to get from the screen to your brain, you must pause as you decipher the meaning of the pictures and symbols. As undetectably short as that pause may be, it means that you're not getting information at optimum speed. Brain waves are a measurement of electrical activity in different regions of the brain. Inside of the tank, Melfina is totally surrounded by this conductive 'liquid,' therefore; the system can send information directly into her brain with artificial brainwaves. Melfina's job is very complicated but her role as a special piloting interface is what makes the Outlaw Star a state-of-the-art Ship.
