Mercenaries...the oft-maligned fortune seekers who can nevertheless tip the scales in favour of one of the Houses, a corporation, or even a wealthy individual. Throughout history these soldiers of fortune have often played crucial roles in the outcome of various conflicts across the world and in the Battletech universe, it is no different.

The Inner Sphere plays host to a number of mercenary units of various sizes. There are four or five 'major' merc outfits, of regiment size and above. These are the older, established units...the elite, if you like. They tend to get the best jobs and the biggest contracts, usually with one of the Successor States.

Wolf's Dragoons
Arguably the ultimate mercenary unit, the Dragoons were originally a Clan Wolf unit sent to spy on the Inner Sphere, using the guise of a mercenary unit as cover. Composed of freeborns, they had few problems passing themselves off as people of the Inner Sphere - only their superior technology marked them as being different. Taking their name from their leader, Jaime Wolf, (freeborns and bondsmen are sometimes given the name of their Clan if they prove themselves worthy of being a warrior),the Dragoons have attained near-legendary status with their performance on the battlefield and their conduct off it.

Of course...the scene would not be complete without the smaller, less well-known units. Often formed by washed-up / renegade ex-military types or career criminals with a taste for combat, these mercs take almost any job, no matter how dirty or desperate. Although most are honourable, some are downright vicious and pay little heed to the conventions of warfare.
