Of course, the elephant in the room comes courtesy of a company
that won't even be exhibiting at CES. Macworld 2008 is set for January
15,
just days after the festivities in Vegas have come to
a close, and all eyes
are on Steve
Jobs, who may—or may not—have a new iPhone to announce.
The CEO
of AT&T just confirmed
that a 3G iPhone is in the works for 2008, so
there's a chance that the iPhone 2.0 will be ready for its
close-up in time for
Jobs' Macworld keynote. The announcement of
the original
iPhone stopped CES dead in its tracks last January, so I'm
sure everyone in
the cell phone industry—whether they admit it or not—will
be looking over
their shoulders for the looming news from San Francisco. That's my
(long-
winded) take on what we might see from cell phones at CES.

Nokia has extended its push into Internet services with the acquisition
of small Berlin-based social networking start-up Plazes. Plazes, with a
headcount of 13, provides location-aware
services that people can use
to plan, record and share their social activities. Nokia
will integrate this
service into its own handsets. The Finnish vendor did not
disclose financial
details of the deal, which is expected to close in the third
quarter this year.
Nokia has recently started to invest heavily in building up its presence
in
Internet services as the traditional
mobile phone handset business evolves.
It has offered US$8.1 billion for US digital maps firm Navteq
and has bought
a number of social networking and media services over
the last year, including
It has also recently been pushing its music
strategy, known as Comes with Music,
and its 'Ovi' mobile Internet portal. Last month Nokia's CEO
Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo
admitted the company's goal is to
"act less like a
traditional manufacturer, and more like an Internet company."
Gartner:
Economy & touchscreens hurt smartphones

Growth in smartphone sales in the first half of this year slowed
compared with the year-ago
period,
Gartner announced today. Although global smartphone sales to end users in the
first
half
of 2008 reached 64 million units, up 22 percent compared with H1 2007, sales
increased
at
a lower rate than in 2007, the analyst firm said in a statement. Gartner cited
the current
economic
environment limiting consumer spending, as well as
"new compelling touch
technology mainly available on enhanced
phones
(based on proprietary
operating systems) rather than smartphones,"
as
reasons for the slowdown in sales. However, the company expects the iPhone 3G and other
high-profile devices to help sales of smartphones return to stronger growth in the
second half of
this
year. Nokia - which last week forecast a
fall in its Q3 total mobile device market share –
continued
to dominate the smartphone market with a 47.5 percent market share in Q2 2008
(albeit that is a 3.3 percent fall on the
year-ago period). RIM recorded
another strong quarter,
doubling
its market share on the year-ago period to 17.4 percent. HTC
gained the number three
position
(4.1 percent market share) during Q2 2008, moving up from the number 7 ranking
in the
first
quarter. Apple's share of global smartphone sales decreased in the second
quarter to 2.8
percent,
from 5.3 percent in the previous quarter, but is expected to regain a
top position in the
global
smartphone vendor rankings due to the launch of the iPhone 3G. Meanwhile Symbian's
dominant
share of the smartphone operating system market fell from 65.6 percent in the
Q2 2007
period
to 57.1 percent in Q2 2008. Gartner said the fall was due to a 26 percent drop
in unit sales
in
second,
with a 17.4 percent share, whilst Microsoft's Windows Mobile share
remained flat,
in third place, at 12 percent.
RIM targets
consumers with new partnerships

Research In Motion (RIM) has followed the launch of the first consumer-focused
'flip-phone' BlackBerry this week with a raft of new partnerships in the consumer
space. Firstly, RIM has partnered with
the MySpace social network to
develop an
integrated 'MySpace Mobile'
application customised for BlackBerry smartphones,
which includes a community page on
MySpace that allows users to access
BlackBerry content such as videos, games and ringtones. RIM cites research from
eMarketer
that forecasts that over 800 million people worldwide will access social
networks via mobile phones by
2012, up from
82 million in 2007. RIM forged a similar
partnership with the Facebook
social network last year.
RIM
has also announced partnerships with Microsoft to integrate
Microsoft's Live Search
capabilities into the BlackBerry
Browser and BlackBerry Maps applications; a television
scheduling application with TiVo; a mobile
ticketing payment partnership with TicketMaster;
and a personal radio application with Slacker.
Yahoo unveils
iPhone app, new developer platform

Yahoo is attempting to
bolster its presence in the mobile space by launching a version
of its oneConnect
mobile service for the iPhone, and a new mobile development platform.
"We
want to create and enable a mobile ecosystem for billions of users," said
Marco
Boerries, executive vice
president of Yahoo's
Connected Life division, reports
San Francisco Chronicle.
Yahoo's oneConnect- which is available now from
Apple's App Store - is designed to pull all friend contact
information into a single
location and enable
communication via instant messaging, e-mail, text messaging
or phone. The application interacts with a range of
social networking sites, including
Facebook, MySpace, Bebo and Twitter. Meanwhile, Yahoo announced that developers
are now able to use Blueprint - its
mobile development platform - to build standalone
applications for Java, Windows Mobile and Symbian
devices, as well as to create
websites accessible via mobile

Google's forthcoming 'Android Market.'
See Android.Yahoo's
focus on mobile is seen as a way to compete better with rival Google, which
dwarfs Yahoo in the two companies'
traditional online search space.
San Francisco Chronicle notes that Yahoo has this week secured a deal to become the
default
mobile search engine for AT&T
and is reportedly close to securing a similar
deal with Verizon
Wireless. It has numerous other partnerships with operators in
Asia.
However,
the report notes that Google is still enjoying a lead in mobile search similar
to the one it has online. Google has a
61.5 percent share of the online search market
compared with 20 percent for Yahoo, according to Nielsen Mobile and comScore.
