Kim Basinger began her ascent to stardom at age 17 by posing for Playboy magazine. This revealing early career move helped open the door for Basinger's successful stint as a top model and Breck shampoo girl. By the late 1970s, she was a familiar face to television viewers for her roles in such series as "Dog and Cat" and "From Here to Eternity." Basinger also was featured in a few popular TV movies such as "The Ghost of Flight 401" and "Katie: Portrait of a Centerfold." In the mid-1980s, Basinger was primarily known for her sexy roles in such films as "No Mercy," "Nine 1/2 Weeks" and "The Natural," for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination as best supporting actress. Tired of being typecast as a siren, Basinger decided to show off her comedic side and in the late 1980s starred in a string of mildly entertaining comedies such as "My Stepmother Is an Alien," in which she portrayed a visitor from outer space who marries an unsuspecting Dan Aykroyd. |
1989 was a good year for Basinger. She had a huge hit in "Batman" with the role of Bruce Wayne's/Batman's girlfriend, Vicky Vale. While making the film, Basinger met Prince, who was writing some of the music for the movie and had a short but very public affair with the singer/songwriter. She also bought the town of Braselton, Ga. Unfortunately, the year ended on a low note when Basinger appeared at the 1990 Academy Awards ceremony in a universally panned gown of her own design and made some unscripted comments about her passion for the movie "Do the Right Thing." In 1991, Basinger starred in "The Marrying Man" with Alec Baldwin. The couple's feuds with Disney, the film's studio, earned Basinger the label of "difficult," but she and Baldwin fell in love on the set, which helped heal some of the wounds inflicted by all the bad press. Basinger was all but written off by Hollywood and found little happiness in her roles in a string of box office flops. Basinger and Baldwin married in 1993, which was about the only good thing to happen to her that year. She was sued for pulling out of the film "Boxing Helena" and had to declare bankruptcy. Her creditors and the town of Braselton went broke, and Basinger was forced to sell off most of the town. She later reached an out-of-court settlement over "Boxing Helena." Basinger took a career break in 1995 to have a baby girl and dedicate time to animal-rights activism. |

Basinger emerged as Lynn Bracken, a prostitute who resembles actress Veronica Lake, in 1997's "L.A. Confidential," a film about crime and corruption in 1950s Los Angeles. She earned the best reviews of her career for her subdued performance and took home a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors' Guild Award and an Oscar for best supporting actress. At the Academy Awards, she cracked up the audience during her acceptance speech by saying, "I just want to thank everyone I've ever met in my entire life." She went on to say, "If anyone has a dream out there, just know that I'm living proof that they do come true." She meant it. |
