The only TG-16 game. |
Of all the Sunsoft games based on the first Batman film, this is the weirdest. Instead of being a traditional side-scrolling action game like the Genesis, NES or Game Boy versions, it is an over-head ''labyrinth'' action game, that has elements from Pac-Man or Hudson Soft's Bomberman. It certainly isn't one of the great games, but pretty interesting since it's a bit funny. GRAPHICS: The graphics are well detailed and with excellent use of colour. The locations of the film have been translated into the overhead view in good fashion. The problem is that the sprites are short and funny-looking. They are well detailed and coloured, but because of the nature of the game they look short and ugly, especially Batman. SOUND: Pretty good music. Some of the music tracks are similar to the NES version, but they have better quality since this is a 16-bit machine. The SFX do their job fine. GAMEPLAY: This is the strange part of the game. As stated before, it is an overhead action game with puzzle elements. There are five different locations based on the film. The first four are divided into 12 stages (or labyrinths, if you prefer) each. In each stage your object is to collect a specific amount of items in order to finish the stage. This means that there are no exits of the level etc. In the first location you have to collect smilex components located in the streets of Gotham, in the second to rub off the damage from the paintings in Flugelheim, in the third to plant bombs in Axis Chemical Factory and in the fourth to cut off the ropes of Joker's balloons. While doing this, you have to face Joker's thugs. You attack them with the batarang. The batarang can be powered up, as well as the speed of the Batman sprite with icons found in the levels. The final level, the Cathedral, is more like a straight action game, since you just have to defeat two bosses and then the Joker himself. Between the levels there are several cool cut-scenes. Especially the one before the Cathedral with the Batwing attacking the Joker and falling after being shot by his super-gun is very nice. OVERALL: Certainly not a great game, but pretty fun for a while and a bit original for a Batman game. Worth playing anyway if you like Batman. |
