G AME REVIEW |
While Batman Returns for Amiga was a side-scrolling beat'em up, the PC version was a point and click adventure, but pretty basic. An experienced player would finish it in less than an hour. The game follows the plot of the film very loosely, but at least the basic elements are the same. It is very unfortunate that the fight scenes are non-interactive. If the game looked the same and had much more action elements it would be much better. |

The in-game graphics are very good. What stands-out are the backgrounds that manage to capture the ''feel'' of the film, like Gotham Plaza or the old Gotham Zoo. The sprites are good as well. The problem is that the ''story'' screens that are shown when the story progresses are awful. You start the game in the Batcave, and then you have to travel through Gotham City and find clues as to the Penguin's whereabouts and schemes. Each time you discover new things, new areas are ''opened'' for you to go to and search for more clues. In some cases you encounter members of the Penguin's gang, and you enter the ''battle mode''. Unfortunately, VERY unfortunately, the battles are not interactive and the only thing you control is the weapon that Batman will use or whether he will fight offensively (losing more energy) or defensively. Sometimes when you defeat certain thugs you can interrogate them to discover new things. The music is taken from the movie, but the quality is nowhere near as good as the music from the SNES Batman Returns game. The SFX are sometimes irritating.Overall, the game has not much to offer, apart from the in-game graphics. I really loved the backgrounds and the sprites, but the cut-scenes are really horrible and the gameplay a bit dull after a while. If they had made an action game similar to the SNES version with the same backgrounds and sprites this would be a much better game. |
