 The only SMS bat-game.

GRAPHICS: Even by SMS standards, the graphics are bad...First of all the sprites... they are incredibly small, and almost ''free'' of any detail... Batman himself looks like a small purple (yes, purple, not black...) spot, and not a Cool Spot for that matter! The enemies look awful. I have to note here that the graphics are very similar with the Game Gear version, but what looked decent in a small LCD screen of a portable console looks awful on a big television screen (or a PC monitor). The backgrounds are fairly good for SMS, but nothing remarkable. Judging by other excellent Master System games, the graphics could be a lot better.

SOUND: Very few 8-bit games have good sound, and this certainly isn't one of them. Some peppy music tracks that have nothing to do with Batman and typical SMS sound effects.

GAMEPLAY: It is, as expected, a simple platform game. Batman can jump, use his grappling hook to climb and throw boomerangs at his enemies. The control is a bit responsive. There are 5 levels. In the first 4 you can choose from two different routes, the first always being the easier. The final level is vast and tough. Each time someone touches you, you lose a life but you continue from the spot you lost it (the life, not your mind, jokers!). There are infinite continues. Personally, when I played this game back in 1993 I finished it in the first day. You understand it's not very tough.

OVERALL: As with most Batman games, beware, disappointment awaits when you'll play it. Bad graphics and sound, but somewhat decent gameplay are its characteristics. If you are (or were) a Batman fan just play and finish it once for curiosity's sake. The rest of you just avoid it.

THE LEVELS:

1. Gotham City Streets: Why does every Batman game start off with some sort of city streets? ;) Anyway, in here, the simplest stage of all, you make your way through the dingy streets of the city to face the Tattooed Strongman. Remember, you can hit him only the moment he drinks.

2. Shreck's Wonderland: After you defeat the Tattooed Strongman, you continue in Max Shreck's (aka Christopher Walken) department store, called 'Wonderland'. An easy level as well, just beware the enemies that come out of doors.

3. Gotham City Rooftops: Another 'cliched' level for a Batman game. Here you must make your way over a series of chasms. Pretty easy if you are careful. In the end you face a silly boss...a huge blue giant! Damn! What were they thinking?

4. Into the Sewers: Watch the waterflow here, and the Emperor penguins with rockets as well. Overall, this is another pretty easy level that can be passed easily if you are careful. At the end you face Catwoman, tougher than ever!

5. The Penguin's Lair: It has some similarities with the Sewers level. Watch the waterflow as well, but there are many chasms this time. It is perhaps the only tough level of the game, but with a little practice you will have no problem. At the end you face (who else?) the birdy man himself, the Penguin. If you learn his pattern he is a piece o'cake. Defeat him to 'bring Gotham City back to the people' (Pretty cliched, I know ;))
