"M"

These are the movies that begin with the letter "M".

M (1931)
Rating: ***
"Though this technically brilliant German film invented the serial killer genre, it is not the best in the genre, since it is bogged down by a few plodding points. However, it is overall quite good, sometimes chilling, entertainment."

MAD MAX (1979)
Rating: **1/2
"Mel Gibson does well in the role that shot him to stardom, 'Mad' Max Rockatansky. However, it does not mean that the film is that great, even though it has amassed a cult following over the years. Many of the villains are idiotic, and the barren, post-apocalyptic landscape contained in the flick is sometimes much too dull for the action going on. However, just as the film gains speed, just as Max is looking really great and cool, the credits shockingly begin to roll, confirming Mad Max's mediocrity."

MADE IN AMERICA (1993)
Rating: **
"Way too stupid and unbelievable...even Will Smith can't save it."

MAJESTIC, THE (2001)
Rating: ***1/2
"A sparkling, underrated gem."

MALLRATS (1995)
Rating: ***
"If you like comic books, you'll like this movie. Otherwise, steer clear."

MAN ON THE MOON (1999)
Rating: ***1/2
"Sad, touching, and with a great performance from Jim Carrey."

MAN WHO KNEW TOO LITTLE, THE (1997)
Rating: ***
"Absurd and unbelievable, yet thoroughly hilarious."

MANIAC MAGEE (2003)
Rating: *
"The only maniacs here are the screenwriters, who couldn't adapt a novel to save their lives. Did they even read it? I doubt it, and be warned: All of the book's powerful messages have been reduced to excessively hammy and silly children's television fluff."

MARS ATTACKS! (1996)
Rating: **
"Well, you've got to give it credit for assembling such a large cast of all-stars for such a crappy script."

M*A*S*H: GOODBYE, FAREWELL AND AMEN (1983)
Rating: ****
"The most-watched television event of all time, this film is an immensely touching farewell to one of the greatest sitcoms of all time (which was, in turn, based on Robert Altman's classic satirical movie). The end scene is quite possibly the best moment in TV history."

MASK, THE (1994)
Rating: ***
"Jim Carrey makes the perfect zany superhero."

MASK OF ZORRO, THE (1998)
Rating: ***1/2
"An exquisitely crafted tale with wonderful performances and a serious, yet playful, sense of adventure. Completely irresistible!"

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD (2003)
Rating: ****
"Gripping from the very first title card, this intense high-seas epic from Peter Weir is not a battle drama with character, yet a character drama with battles. Russel Crowe is highly commended for his strong, yet vulernable lead performance, and Paul Bettany is superb as well. A fantastic work in every way, Master and Commander is an event not to be missed."

MATILDA (1996)
Rating: ***
"This sterling adaptation of Roald Dahl's whimsical book is every bit as charming and funny as its source material. Danny DeVito does a great job as director/co-star, and Mara Wilson is superb in her lead role as the quasi-magical title character. All-in-all, Matilda is a weird, strangely entertaining, and darkly comedic metaphor for children's problems with their parents and the world, but also a noteworthy one."

MATRIX, THE (1999)
Rating: ****
"What is the Matrix? Why ask me? Find out for yourself when you jump down this slick and freakish rabbit hole."

MATRIX RELOADED, THE (2003)
Rating: ****
"Kung-fu, ninja weaponry, car chases, clones...can we ask for anything more? Really, can we?"

MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, THE (2003)
Rating: ****
"An amazing visual spectacle buoyed by a great story and nice performances that amazingly manages to almost top the first (and the one that is farthest from the others in a storytelling sense), and also caps off the strangest, loosest adaptation of the Bible I've ever seen. One of the best, if not the best, science fiction trilogies of all time."

MEET THE PARENTS (2000)
Rating: ***
"Crude classiness. It's absolutely hilarious!"

MEMENTO (2000)
Rating: ***1/2
"This is a uniquely and structurally brilliant film with outstanding technical qualities due to its amazing storytelling styles. Its biggest fault, however, is that it resorts to a formula that can sometimes become easily predictable. The acting is fine and the direction wonderful, but without the shocking ending that puts the film in an entirely different perspective, I would've been disappointed."

MEN IN BLACK (1997)
Rating: ****
"The best movie involving aliens. Ever."

MEN IN BLACK II (2002)
Rating: ***
"Way too silly and disappointing, with a messed-up plot and a false sense of epicness. Hey, I still bought it."

MERCURY RISING (1998)
Rating: **1/2
"Bruce Willis is the intense hero, Alec Baldwin, the chilling villain. Mercury Rising rates pretty well on the old thermometer."

MERLIN'S SHOP OF MYSTICAL WONDERS (1996)
Rating: *
"I'll never look at those little monkeys-with-cymbals the same way again."

MICHAEL (1996)
Rating: **1/2
"It's very odd to see John Travolta play an angel."

MIGHTY DUCKS, THE (1992)
Rating: **
"Foul-mouthed little brats in an obnoxious hockey movie that should've been thrown into the penalty box."

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1998)
Rating: **1/2
"Amazing ape animatronics are the real highlight of this adventure show."

MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE MOVIE (1995)
Rating: *1/2
"The television series is watchable as goofy martial arts hokum, but this film is not. It's goofy, but it's sure not fun, with embarrassing special effects and acting that sometimes borders on horrible. Should've stuck to TV..."

MINORITY REPORT (2002)
Rating: ****
"An awe-inspiring sci-fi masterpiece! ...And I'm certainly not in the minority here."

MISERY (1990)
Rating: ***1/2
"A twisted monument of terror that could only have come from the imaginative, and questionably sane, mind of Stephen King, who wrote the source material."

MISS CONGENIALITY (2000)
Rating: ***
"Great casting and a very witty script."

MR. DEEDS (2002)
Rating: **1/2
"With his affable charm, Adam Sandler single-handedly makes this one worth watching, and that is one magnificent deed. By the way, I haven't seen the original Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, but I bet you this one rips it apart."

MOM'S GOT A DATE WITH A VAMPIRE (2000)
Rating: **1/2
"This is just silly fun, and compared to the normally putrid Disney Channel fare, this is actually pretty good."

MONSTER'S BALL (2001)
Rating: *
"It feels as if this interracial love story focuses more upon racism than any true love or chemistry whatsoever."

MONSTERS, INC. (2001)
Rating: ****
"Real charm and comedy ooze from this instantly classic Disney film."

MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (1974)
Rating: ***
"Dude, those Monty Python people are weirdos...and they're all the more fun for it!"

MORTAL KOMBAT (1995)
Rating: **
"One big cheeseball that manages, in the end, and beyond my belief, to have some mildly entertaining fight sequences."

MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, THE (2002)
Rating: **1/2
"Call me a nut if you will, but I believe in the Mothman, and this movie lies quite a bit about the legend."

MOUSE HUNT (1997)
Rating: **1/2
"Crazy, wacky slapstick that doesn't always stick together."

MRS. DOUBTFIRE (1993)
Rating: ***1/2
"Robin Williams at his best!"

MULAN (1998)
Rating: ***
"Meet my friend Disney, who has made Eddie Murphy funny again."

MUMMY, THE (1999)
Rating: ***1/2
"A rollicking popcorn adventure that'll leave you shaking in your seat, biting your nails, and holding your sides with laughter."

MUMMY RETURNS, THE (2001)
Rating: **1/2
"A decent sequel, but a tad too corny, even for me."

MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE (1992)
Rating: ***
"A magical and funny take on Charles Dickens' oft-told Christmas tale."

MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING (2002)
Rating: ***1/2
"One big fat surprise. One of the best romantic comedies of recent times, marred only by an awful sitcom."

MY BOYFRIEND'S BACK (1993)
Rating: **
"One of the srangest little creations I've ever seen."

MY FAVORITE MARTIAN (1999)
Rating: *
"Unfunny and distasteful."

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE (1996)
Rating: ***
"The TV show was one of the funniest, and the movie is one of the funniest, as well."

MYSTIC RIVER (2003)
Rating: ***1/2
"The teriffic ensemble acting is the highlight of Clint Eastwood's fantastic character study of three friends all grown up and caught in a tragedy. Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, and Tim Robbins all deliver Oscar-caliber performances, plus what they have to work is none too shabby either. I will admit one thing, however: The final two scenes of the movie are pretty lackluster, and make us realize that not everything can be mystical."
