'When Mandy Met Kelly...'

Everyone knows Mandy Moore and Kelly Osbourne are totally good friends. But do they ever drive each other crazy? Steal each other's clothes? Go hunting for boys? We gave them a list of our most burning questions, and they interviewed each other.

Kelly: So what did you think of me before we met, Mandy?

Mandy: To be honest, I thought you were going to be...

Kelly: Mean?

Mandy: Not necessarily mean, but kind of standoffish.

Kelly: I had heard a lot of really, really good things about you so I only thought that I wasn't allowed to say any bad things in front of you! [laughs]

Mandy: We met at MTV's Spring Break, and we went out to dinner with a bunch of people that night in Cancun...

Kelly: The food was so awful!

Mandy: It was disgusting.

Kelly: We all, like, ordered the same thing; it was gross.

Mandy: At what point after we met did you think we'd become friends?

Kelly: It was really the instant.

Mandy: Yeah, I remember talking and it was like, "Wow, this is someone my age and she lives in L.A. and we can talk!"

Kelly: [laughs] And we both don't like the same people, so...

Mandy: Yeah, we bonded on gossiping about people we don't like. But don't name names!

Kelly: No, I can't, I get in trouble! There was this one person who screamed at me but I don't think I made her cry...

Mandy: Yeah, but they deserve it. [laughs] Okay, name three things you like best about me.

Kelly: I like the way we talk shit together. It's awesome!

Mandy: I like that you're not afraid to speak your mind...

Kelly: And I love blowing smoke up your ass right now -- it's real fun! [laughs]

Mandy: I like that you don't really care what people think of you and you don't apologize for yourself. That's really cool because there's not a lot of 17-,18-year-old girls who are like that. I mean, I'm not one of them. I'm supersensitive.

Kelly: Which I don't quite understand, because to be honest, like everyone was saying today at the photo shoot -- we don't think we've met a more beautiful 17- or 18-year-old in our lives. It's like --

Mandy: But I mean, you don't let anything faze you and that's what I respect so much about you. Not to sound cheesy or anything, but that's not something you can learn -- that's something you're just born with.

Kelly: What do you think is the biggest difference between us? I think we're opposites.

Mandy: Kind of, yeah.

Kelly: But I think that's why we're really good friends. We complement each other -- like when you're dating someone, opposites attract. I've discovered stuff about myself from hanging out with you, and you've discovered stuff about yourself from hanging out with me.

Mandy: I agree. Very well said. So what do I do that drives you crazy?

Kelly: [laughs] Everything! No, I think what drives me crazy is when I'll say or do something that I know you don't agree with and I wish you would say "You're a bitch," but I know you won't. I wish you'd just go, "Oh shut the fuck up."

Mandy: Okay, well, now I will. Shut the fuck up. [Kelly laughs happily.] Do you believe guys and girls can be friends?

Kelly: Almost all my friends are guys.

Mandy: Some girls can't be friends with guys and some guys can't be friends with girls.

Kelly: But that's just because they have sex on the mind and that's it. And another thing is I don't like hanging out with people who spend all their time looking in the mirror and going, "Do I look fat in this?" I don't want to be the reassuring friend; I just want to go out and have fun.

Mandy: I kind of agree with you. So many girls, at like 17, 18, are so into the petty things. It's like, who wants to waste time worrying about that?

Kelly: Like certain people are obsessed with boys and I'm so sick of it. Has a guy ever come between you and a friend?

Mandy: Nope.

Kelly: Me neither. I would just walk away from it.

Mandy: Absolutely. Friends are more important. Okay, speaking of friends, do you watch Friends?

Kelly: Why is everyone so obsessed with that fucking show?! It is so annoying and stupid and for retards. Like some of the jokes and the expressions on their faces piss me off.

Mandy: [gasps] No, see -- I like it. I like it.

Kelly: I hate it.

Mandy: What should we do the next time we have a girls' night out? I dunno.

Kelly: God, last time we did that we went to...

Mandy: ...try to look for guys and it was very unsuccessful!

Kelly: Yeah and my friend -- who's really hot -- was hitting on you. He goes "You look bored" and you go, "Yeah, I'm really bored. Bored of talking to you!" [laughs]

Mandy: I mean, if you are going to flirt with someone, you shouldn't say, "You look bored." So I just shot it right back at him. I don't really care how good-looking you are, dude.

Kelly: I was trying so hard not to laugh in his face! We kinda just turned around and quickly walked out.

Mandy: It was fun.

Kelly: You've done some really funny stuff with my brother Jack, too. Like the time you were in Mel's Diner and Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys was there and you guys sent your check over to him and wore on the back of it "Sorry, we don't have enough money to pay the bill but we know you do. Will you please get it for us?" [laughs]

Mandy: And he like yelled at the waitress "I don't believe you!" and the waitress had to bring the check back to Jack and I and we were like, "All right, we're leaving, who cares?" Then he [figured out it was for real] and chased us out of the restaurant and was like, "We should all hang out sometime," and Jack and I were like, "Uh...no." [laughs]

Kelly: No! [laughs] No. He's, like, riding my brother's coattails now that his band's not good anymore.

Mandy: Okay, who would you most like to work with in a movie, on an album and on TV... Hey, remember the script that was done about our friendship -- did you ever read it?

Kelly: I never read it. I heard it was really bad. They're like, we're soul mates!

Mandy: Yeah. Everyone exploits everything.

Kelly: So...if I could make a movie with anyone? Audrey Hepburn, if she were still alive. And I'd do a record with Blondie. And on TV...no one. [laughs]

Mandy: I'd work with Bette Midler on a movie or a record or on TV! Okay, if you were stranded on a desert island and could only bring one CD, what would it be?

Kelly: Probably The Best of Blondie.

Mandy: I'd bring Jeff Buckley's Grace. What DVD?

Kelly: Zoolander.

Mandy: Welcome to the Dollhouse.

Kelly: I love that movie.

Mandy: Love, love that movie! What beauty product?

Kelly: Suntan lotion. I hate being tan.

Mandy: I would bring suntan lotion too because I burn really easily. What book?

Kelly: A long one -- to keep me busy. [laughs]

Mandy: Yes, a long book...The Odyssey. Gadget?

Kelly: A compass.

Mandy: I'm thinking a laptop with a modem. Food?

Kelly: Mashed potatoes and peas, I'd be set.

Mandy: I would bring sushi.

Kelly: You can make sushi on the island -- you've got fish!

Mandy: No rice.

Kelly: That's right. Who would you want to be stranded on a desert island with? Someone hot -- you need someone to stare at. I'm not saying any names though, because then I meet them and they're really rude and obnoxious to me.

Mandy: Yeah -- random hot boy.

Kelly: Who's your favorite designer? Mine is Marc Jacobs.

Mandy: Me too. I've never been to one of his shows but I want to go to see the clothes.

Kelly: You know when you go to those shows, it's not about going to see the fucking clothes -- it's about going to see what mongoloid is sitting in the front row pretending to be cool. I just can't sit there with all these fashionistas like [affects snooty accent], "What are you wearing, darling?" All right, new question: How would you describe my personal style?

Mandy: Um, eclectic?

Kelly: I would say that you are very natural. Very feminine. And I don't know anyone else who dresses like you.

Mandy: I don't know anyone who dresses like you either.

Kelly: When I see [certain] clothes, I'm like, "Oh my God, that's so Mandy."

Mandy: Same with me. Like those sparkly shoes I was wearing at the shoot today -- I was like, "Those are Kelly." I wish that I could dress more like you sometimes.

Kelly: Other times I look at you and I'm like, Oh God -- if I were to put on a black T-shirt and jeans! On you it looks classic; on me, it looks frumpy.

Mandy: It doesn't!

Kelly: What do you want to steal from my closet?

Mandy: I already have. You lent me a jacket that says KELLY OSBOURNE KELLY OSBOURNE KELLY OSBOURNE all over it and PISS OFF on the back. It's sitting in my closet right now. I don't know if you'd want to steal anything from my closet, though. I'm not cool enough.

Kelly: I like that bag that you had the last time we were out, the little Christian Dior one. And the dress you wore to the MTV awards -- that was awesome.

Mandy: Yeah, the vintage dress.

Kelly: If you weren't a performer, what would you be doing?

Mandy: Well, I'd still be in school. And probably studying journalism. I'd love to write for a newspaper or magazine.

Kelly: I would probably work with children. I like kids -- I just think they're really honest and sweet. Are you considering college at some point? I'm not!

Mandy: I consider it but I don't think it will happen until later in life. All of my friends are at college now, and it's so weird to talk to them as they're getting ready for school. It's just a completely different lifestyle. What do you think is the public's biggest miscoception about you?

Kelly: I know what it is about you.

Mandy: Okay, what is it?

Kelly: I think you're linked with that whole Britney Spears sweet-white-picket-fence thing and it's a bit unfair. Because that's not what you're about.

Mandy: Thank you!

Kelly: I don't what it is about me.

Mandy: Probably that most people...

Kelly: ...think I'm a bitch.

Mandy: Well, yeah, that you're whiny. But really, you're a role model. How do you feel about that?

Kelly: [sounding worried] I didn't know I was one... People say that to me and I don't understand why because I don't do anything that's worthy of...

Mandy: Yes, you do -- you are yourself! That's what being a role model is all about.

Kelly: I don't know what to say to that. I mean, it's flattering... but I think anyone who is remotely famous can be considered a role model.

Mandy: It's true. But some are more approriate role models than others. I think you are a fantastic role model for teenage girls to look up to.

Kelly: It's a lot to live up to. I feel bad for Britney Spears because they made her out to be this white-picket-fence girl, and now that she's grown up and being how she wants to be, they're slamming her for it. I don't want to disappoint anyone. I don't need anyone's expectations. [looks at her list of questions and cracks up] Okay, this question is definitely for you -- not me: How do you feel about being a sex symbol?

Mandy: Blech. I don't know!

Kelly: You love it -- shut up.

Mandy: [sarcastic] Oh, I love it.

Kelly: When I go out with you, every guy is like [gasps].

Mandy: Oh, come on...

Kelly: It's true and you know it.

Mandy: I went on my website the other day and this guy was like, "Mandy, can you get me a date with Kelly Osbourne?" I'm like, Please. No way!

Kelly: Yeah, well, I also get a lot of mail from people in jail, which is really weird. [laughs]

Mandy: That is weird. What do you think is the best part about being famous? Like how weird is it for you?

Kelly: It's not something I think about. You get to meet great people and you get to travel and that's the best part of it. What about you?

Mandy: I don't feel it, because it's been really slow and steady for me. I don't think I could handle in the way you are. My head would be spinning. Do you think you've changed much in the last year?

Kelly: As a person, no. You met me just before the show came out and I don't think I've changed -- I think my life has changed.

Mandy: That's pretty remarkable. Do you have any regrets about being on the show?

Kelly: No. Because I wouldn't be here right now if I did. You know what I mean? You shouldn't have any regrets.

Mandy: Exactly.

Kelly: What's going on with your movie career?

Mandy: I have a film coming out on Valentine's Day called How to Deal. Then I have an independent film with Elijah Wood and Franka Potente called Try Seventeen. And I'm starting another film up in Vancouver with Jean Malone and Macaulay Culkin and Patrick Fugit called Saved.

Kelly: Jack and I will have to come visit you. We said we were going to last time but we just never quite made it.

Mandy: You definitely have to come!

Kelly: Who's your favorite costar so far?

Mandy: Shane [West] is the best; he's the coolest.

Kelly: He's a nice guy. And seriously, when you have to be that close and even have to kiss somebody in a movie...

Mandy: ...you have to enjoy spending time with them.

Kelly: Otherwise it just wouldn't look good on screen. When are you going to start recording your next album?

Mandy: I've recorded one song, and I'm probably going to go into the studio again at the end of this year. It's going to be different from my other records. What about your album?

Kelly: I got to work with the most amazing producer, and got to actually write almost all the lyrics. It was so much fun.

Mandy: I've been writing a lot for my next album, too.

Kelly: I think your next album will probably be your best. Because when you get into this [business] so young, they're like "Sing this song! Do this dance!" But then you start to learn and you're like, "Okay, I want to sing this song and I want it to be this way." You get creative control.

Mandy: Yeah, more of a voice.

Kelly: And more of a chance to make it how you want it. Like with my album, I don't care what other people think of it -- I really like it and I'm proud of myself because I did it and I don't care whether anyone buys it becaue it was an accomplishment for me and nobody else. It made me really happy.

Mandy: That's all that matters. You have to be happy first and foremost because it's your name -- it's Kelly Osbourne, it's Mandy Moore. You have to be happy.

Kelly: Yeah, it's fun.

Mandy: It's just about getting older and learning from mistakes you made growing up.

Kelly: I made a lot of mistakes! [laughs]

Mandy: Me too and it's fine -- you're human.
