Around 1860 young William Blake, accountant from Cleveland, is travelling to the Wild West to take up a job at a town called Machine. Yet, on his arrival, the events take a very unexpected turn: the job offer is gone, and Blake, penniless, at night finds himself in the room of a poor flower-girl, not knowing where else to spend the night. And this is just the beginning of a journey deeper and deeper into a mysterious and unknown world. Shot at and injured by the girl's finacee whom he kills in self-defense, hunted by marshals and bounty hunters, Blake slowly changes from a hapless and totally bewildered victim of fate into an ever unwilling, but nontheless successful killer, still totally incomprehensive of what is happening to him. Leading him on this weird journey towards death is Nobody, an outcast Indian who happened to find the helpless Blake outside town. Nobody is fascinated by his new-found companion, believing he really is the dead English poet of the same name of whom he is an ardent admirer. Nobody teaches Blake about the spiritual side of this journey, taking his adored „dead" poet to where he'll find his final destination, his final death - and release from a mysterious and hostile world. A weird, perfectly ironic, yet in its ending strangely consoling Western with a fascinating portrayal of reversed roles between Indian and White Man. Even though you may need strong nerves to stomach the few of this movie's violent scenes, the consoling quality of its ending makes up for this, and the almost hypnotizing soundtrack by Neil Young is an unexpendable component in its overall spiritual quality.
