FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, the film based on the book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, chronicles a psychedelic odyssey undertaken by Thompson's alter-ego Raoul Duke and his attorney in 1971. The acid/opiate/ether-eating writer is to cover a motor bike race in the Nevada desert and a law enforcement convention at a Vegas hotel, but his drug-effused observations take center stage, proving the addage that life, compiled of perceptions and day-long minutia, is a journey, not a destination. His articles are only to cover and, consequently, they
become a more interesting story-within-a-story. Carpet patterns wriggle and writhe, a congregation of lounge lizards metamorphoses into actual reptiles, and hypocrisy and the absurdity of the human condition become ironic commentary in which the participants in the druggie experience see with better clarity through what is supposed to be a stuporous veil than those who are straight and sober. Elevating the term "road trip" to new heights, the film, to borrow Raoul Duke's description of his attorney, is "too weird to live, too rare to die".
