The year is 1927. Little Fegele lives happily with her father and grandmother in a Russian village. With the ever presnet threat of persecution her father leaves for America. Violence engulfs the village and Fegele finds herself in England. Forbidden to speak Yiddish and now re-named Suzie she learns to sing. Ten years later she goes to the Paris stage where she is befriended by an ambitious dancer, Lola. Suzie hopes to go to America to find her father. She falls in love with gypsy horse-handler, Cesar. When the Germans invade Paris with plans to round up the Jews and Gypsies, Lola warns Suzie that her life is in danger. Suzie wants to stay and fight but Cesar encourages her to leave.
