The way the world works…
Aw, fuck it.
**********
“Earth. Floating, calm and peaceful. Looks serene from this view, doesn’t it, Maria? Doesn’t it make you just want to go down there and see all the sights and hear all of the wonderful things it looks like it has? Don’t you want to become friends with it, dance with it, embrace it with all of your being?”
She smiled. “I do.”
Suddenly, Gerald became angry, bursting with one of his usual fits of explanation. “That’s your mistake! There is nothing beautiful in that world! Only does it look so grand from the furthest of views, way up here, where it’s not so personal!”
Maria cringed, but nodded in understanding, lying. It was hard living with him, and even harder after she left her home. She had been on the Ark for a few days and already she didn’t like the way it was going. It seemed cold, desperate, sterile and weak. Not what she was used to. The best way to cope was to go along with everything rather than fight it. To float rather than to swim against.
Maria wanted people. Maria wanted someone to talk to that was halfway sane. She wanted music, dancing, parties, and love…
That was the most devastating part of being away from all that she had known was that she never got past her first date. The boy that she loved wanted desperately to take their relationship to the next level, but she was suddenly snatched up and taken away. No chance for any of that now, as he was probably beginning to face the truth down there, just as she had.
Now, in cold and dead space, nobody but insanity personified to keep her company. She hated the Professor for it, with such a vengeance that at times Maria felt like a tea kettle ready to burst.
With that, Maria walked away from the view screen looking down at the soft, blue planet. It was too painful to look at anymore, and she wanted to relieve some frustration…
**********
Life on the ship was a mundane one. It always consisted of the same routine, over and over again, repeated each morning. Maria did as much as she could to spice up her life, but even then she managed to fall into a schedule. Her same clothes were circulated over and over again, and she only had three pairs of each article. The only thing that offered any difference in routine were her silk, dark black/red panties…
But her days were always the same, not calling for any special occasion whatsoever. It wasn’t worth wearing them, and she was afraid that if Gerald somehow found out about them they would get taken away. There was no telling the old man anymore. His brain seemed long gone.
Most of the service ‘bots did the chores, and by 0900 all of the tasks were well taken care of. The rest of the day was left to nothing. There were no books, movies, or games. Nothing to learn. Gerald had decided to abandon Earth’s culture and create his own, which allowed for a very empty way of life.
Most of the information to be learned was of the technical nature, like physics and anatomy. There were several experiments going on around the facility that were very complicated and not easy to understand at all.
By the third year, she was bored out of her mind.
Maria found herself at many times just lazing around her room, not moving, mostly staring at herself in the mirror, at her high cheekbones and rounded head. She admitted that she did resemble Gerald a bit, but hoped that she didn’t harbor the same mental instability.
On her back Maria lay, letting her mind float free. Lost in thought.
**********
The warm sun floated just above her observation window, marking the new day. The Space Colony Ark was made to rotate very much like a planet housing 48 hour days, and the hours took some getting used to. Maria figured it was made only so Gerald could say that it was still different from Earth in every aspect. He seemed to be getting more and more eccentric as the days passed…
Soon, several more days came and went. Then months.
Maria was sixteen when she first heard about Project Shadow.
**********
“Humans can never be as perfect as their own creations. Whatever I make, even though I have achieved such a great, powerful medal, I will never be its equal. This is how most men pass the time, by creating things better than they are. This big obsession for being known by others for the creation of something so utterly close to God that others can’t help but imitate it and make it their own. Thing is, too often to men get caught up in the prospect of making themselves in their own image as well, producing a hybrid of sorts. Such a selfish act to try and make yourself better than what you can be, and imposing it upon others. You see, why try to create in your own image if you are imperfect? Aren’t you, in a way, still contributing to imperfection, and making more smudges on a pearl?”
His voice had been getting weird lately. Preachy, sure, but it had a hint of… extreme eccentricity. Maria could not put her finger on it. It was becoming more and more scary to be around him.
In fact, as the time dragged on, it got to be where Maria avoided the Doctor altogether. It wasn’t that hard, actually, as not only did he seem to be in his own little world, but also seemed to go around the spaceship on a strict schedule. Never, ever, did he change the path he walked or the time it took him to do it.
So, after awhile, it stopped being scary, because Maria could snoop around wherever she wanted in full confidence, and this is how she found out about Project Shadow.
**********
“Don’t worry. He wont be back for hours.” Over the years, Maria not only learned as much as she could about the ship, but also about robotics. In fact, she even built herself a little companion of hers out of a vacuum cleaner unit. I didn’t talk much, but soon, it would do more when she learned to program it. For now, it was a nice way to talk to someone. Although, the poor thing would never have a name. Maria didn’t know any good ones.
Her talking to it was more of a way to reassure herself, rather than the faceless, emotionless unit. Maria felt uneasy about sneaking into the computer base still, even though she had done it countless time before, at first just accessing non restricted, then trying to hack into higher and higher security.
It was fascinating to her. There were so many secrets she wanted to uncover. It was almost compensation for not being on Earth.
Her small, delicate fingers clicking at the keyboard at the terminal, she barely reached into a new folder when she noticed something…
“Project Shadow?”
Intriguing. It seemed to be the highest protected folder, and was huge in size, meaning it was packed with information.
It made Maria tingle with excitement.
But right when the folder was attempted to be accessed, the alarms went off, and, bathed in red, Maria made a mad dash back to her room, shutting the door as fast as she could.
Breathing hard, now safe for the moment, she was confident.
“Whew! What a rush,” Maria exclaimed to her ‘bot, laying down on the bed and closing her eyes, the adrenaline beginning to wear off.
She wanted to talk about her suspicions about the folder, and she wanted to discuss how she was going to get inside, but she was too tired. She need something to wake her up.
Turning her head to the side on her bed, she relaxed.
“Goodnight…”
**********
It was getting worse. Gerald was not merely walking around the ship, but stomping at it. He seemed so frustrated, and his usual babblings became even more incoherent.
Sometimes, he would even disappear to his lab on the forth level, for hours and hours at a time. All he ever did was rant and work, rant and work.
In fact, there were no more discussions like there used to be. On the rare occasions where they did actually run into each other, it was all so one sided that any noise that Maria made during his rant was thought of as a direct attack on his opinions.
The beatings started when Maria was only fourteen. The happened with more and more frequency, and soon the “Tapeworm Theorum” was proved correct, as Maria started finding ways to adapt. Evade and survive, so to speak.
Still, some scars would never heal.
**********
This explained her curiosity of everything, not only to make up for being lost on Earth, but to find out exactly what made Gerald so crazy.
Why does he hate Earth so much?
The search began around her fifteenth birthday, though she had stopped counting years before. No Earth holidays were celebrated on the ship.
But what started out as curiosity blossomed into a dire need for something. The emptiness that Maria felt everyday was becoming more and more potent. It was a desperate yearning now, a reason to stay alive.
Back when the beatings were still fresh, Maria thought of numerous, bloody ways to surprise the scientist, like hanging herself in his lab. Or slitting her wrist over the control panels on the bridge and shorting everything out.
Now, years later, she was back at the computer console, hacking away at the keys and occasionally saying something to her ‘bot pet. It was a few days after the she had heard about the Shadow Project and she had forgotten all about it, instead focusing on a new folder.
And so more time passed. Uneventfully.
Then it got worse.
**********
Just to add more fuel to the fire, an organization on Earth decided that what Gerald was doing was illegal, and were attempting to shut him down.
This changed everything. Security on the ship became tighter, and it was almost impossible to go anywhere without reaching a checkpoint. It took a good two months for Maria to find her way around.
But this time, a new threat had arisen. Gerald began actively searching for her, and when he did find her on rare occasions, there were no words spoken. Just abuse.
It was always over in ten minutes, and it was only a little bit of blood each time. Maria didn’t seem to be too concerned until after one of these instances she started coughing up blood.
Did she seek medical attention from the infirmary? No. But what she did do was increase her search.
Soon, she never slept. She was always moving around the ship, drinking in as much as she could. Somewhere, she would find the answer, and in the end it would all be okay.
Not once did she realize that she probably was becoming mad herself.
**********
“Almost there…”
Maria, now daring even as far as to insert viruses into the system, trying to create enough mischief on the ship to distract Gerald further, allowing more time.
Again, she had come across the long forgotten Shadow Project file, and was trying as hard as she could to open it.
The pet ‘bot at her feet was shut down for the moment, so it took no notice of how fast her fingers moved.
“Come on… come on… YES!” The file opened.
After exploring some, not opening any of the documents, she found that most of them were not as big as others that she had found on lesser security levels. Odd, to say the least.
Maria stared at the millions upon millions of document icons, overwhelmed by them, and wondered what could be in each of these that would make Gerald so crazy. And what any of them had to do with Project Shadow.
Shrugging and sighing to herself, she decided to click on the first one…
Suddenly, alarms started blaring all around her, and she didn’t wait long enough to find out that it wasn’t her that set them off, and instead ran off, hastily grabbing her pet before she left.
**********
Whenever something like this happened, it was always to the core where the Doctor went, and Maria knew she couldn’t very well bolt out the room, because she would immediately run into him. He had a way of showing up in places where he was least wanted or needed.
Hiding behind a vent, the smell of cold metal almost overwhelming, Maria quieted her breathing and watched the Doctor enter the room.
“Can’t be here! Earth dwellers! They never give up to try and destroy perfection. Creation to me is destruction to them. They will never understand. Never, and I know this, I do. Humanity is living its last days.” He was up to console. “I will show them true creation, true perfection, and they will never again be a bother to the universe.” He tapped the keys on the board. “All guilty will suffer.” The glowing image popped up on screen, and Gerald’s eyes went glossy and wide, and for two minutes he didn’t blink or move. He just stared at the screen while the alarms still blazed on and off. When he snapped out of it finally, his hands were moving across the keys with frightening speed, efficiency, and anger. “HOW DARE THEY TRY TO INFILTRATE MY WORLD!” The reflections on his face had changed along with his expression. In addition to the rocking of the spaceship, flashes of light danced across the Doctor’s eyes and skin, and they looking like explosions. Even when he smiled the Doctor did not lose his hardened expression. It was over already and the alarms had finally stopped. Gerald was breathing heavily. And when Maria fell out of the vent and onto the floor in his view only then did he clench his fists again.
**********
Later, in front of her mirror and clutching her pet to her chest did she speak again. The black eye looked so horrible for her to look at, but it was a reminder to hurry along her work. Briefly her eyes fell to the smashed head of the ‘bot in her bruised arms.
Despite the fact that her ‘bot would never be the same again, a few good things had come out of the beating. One, she now knew the code of the files he was keeping secret. Two, now she knew that he may one day be brought down by the government of Earth. Three, it was also incentive to carry out a plan she had had since she was fourteen years old.
Despite how much it hurt, Maria’s face fell into a smile and the ‘bot in her arms fell to the floor.
**********
Two months later.
Maria stood in anticipation, down at the core lab, in front of a giant test tube, awaiting Shadow’s arrival. The Doctor would not be bothering her anymore.
In order for her to bear witness to this, she had to drug Gerald at the right time. It had been a long wait, but she figured it would all be worth it.
Clasping her hands and fidgeting nervously, she watched the countdown, and for an instant, all memories came in a rush. Not just the bad, but the good as well. She imagined what it might have been like to live on Earth, just a little longer. The lives she could have started, and touched, and effected. How much better she could have strived to be.
Maria didn’t share the same hate Gerald did for the Earth. Probably the exact opposite. Even though she had spent the last five or six years of her life in solitude on the Ark, saturated in enmity for the spinning ball of blue, she still felt as in awe of it as ever.
So, from the point when she had poisoned the Doctor, right up to when the tube shields were opening, and smoke was pouring out of the crevasse into the room, and it was too thick to breath normally, Maria thought only of the better life she may have had, and of better times that weren’t real.
Shadow stepped out of the tube.
**********
One month earlier.
The plan formulated and set in motion, when there was no time to turn back, Maria tried to find out as much as she could about Project Shadow, but the files were vague and in descriptive, instead only talking about “Ultimate Life form” and “Immortal Beings.” It at first just sounded like more of his insane ramblings… but they gradually grew in credibility the more Maria read on.
When she learned as much as she could, she closed the file and set her eyes on a new set. The other ones that were in tight security. The ones that seemed to make Gerald so angry at Earth.
Taking a deep breath, she walking into the folder, and opened the top file.

Daniel and Sally were going out for a long time before deciding to take it “TO THE NEXT LEVEL (if you know what I mean, wink wink -_^)
He started moving her hands over her large breasts, making her moan in pleasure. He is so good, she thought to herself, her hand going down his pants. He was thinking the same thing. His hands moved lower over her sensuous body and he stuck his hands down her pants, eliciting more pleasure.
“What’s this?” Maria closed this one and opened the next one.
Erik and Sasha quickly got into bed, both of them thinking the same think. Their hand s went right for each others “private areas” and their mouths met. Erik broke off his kiss and smiled, moving lower to her red blossom.
“Huh?” And the next one was opened.
She rubbed her throbbing sex with her tongue, sweet juices flowing. She swallowed them happily, her lover still moaning in pure bliss.
“What?”
He stuck his 12 inch member into her SLIT . . .
“I…”
He rubbed his member all over her soft, luscious, supple body. His member fully erect, he pushed it inside of her.
“… don’t…”
His harsh but delicate hands massaging her orbs while easing in and out of her, she moaned and groaned and she screamed “I I I OHHHHHHHHHHH GOD YESS” and he emptied his seed inside of her. (THIS IS A SEX SCENE, TEEHEE HEE)
“… understand…”
And after two hours, Maria was still just as confused as ever. The files went on and on, all about the same thing. By the time she reached the end, her mind was jumbled with all the information she jacked into herself, and without any caution whatsoever, walked out of the computer room.
Not blinking.
**********
It became so clear. When he stepped out everything became like a blue sapphire the size of a planet spinning in front of the sun.
Maria figured out everything.
It was of polar opposites.
Gerald was still lying dead on her bedroom floor when her and Shadow walked in. His dead eyes still were fixed on the bed. “Perfect,” Maria thought, and a grin that looked so much like the Doctor’s crept to her face.
Shadow, eyes wide with wonder, was still taking in all of the new things he was looking at when Maria took him by the shoulders and pressed her mouth to his.
He had started to like this nice person that was showing him everything around that he needed to know, and now he wondered if this was another thing he was supposed to learn.
Maria kept her mouth in his for a few seconds, but nothing was happening to her. There was no increase in anything. Sure, her heart beat a little faster, but the kiss seemed dry. It wasn’t working.
Go further.
The problem had to be solved. In order to make everything alright, she needed to do everything Gerald hated. Fight back, and maybe he’ll let her go back to Earth, which was now more than just a fascination but a hopeless yearning. Not a want, but a need.
With that, she pushed as hard as she could, forcing him to fall against her bed on the far wall. Now, straddling him, she removed her T-shirt. Her bare chest exposed, she looked at his reaction.
He was staring blankly, unsure of what to do.
Nothing yet. She felt nothing.
Squirming a little, Maria managed to pull off everything she had under her waist. Again, she awaited his reaction.
There was a notable change in his breathing, and Maria could feel a throbbing where she sat, and she took that as a good sign. Still, though, she didn’t feel any better.
Leaning forward, she had her face against his cheek. Shadow kept his prone position. His breathing was fast and nervous, and his breath tickled her ear, so she sat back up. Immediately she noticed the growing warmth that she was sitting on.
Without reservation, she fit Shadow into her.
Maria had to bite her lip to keep from screaming. It hurt. Sure, she knew it would, but not this much. Still, though, according to what she read, there should be a rush of pleasure coming.
She waited.
Nothing happened.
The pain subsided, but she still felt no better. Shadow, only breathing hard and looking a little scared and confused, did not move at all.
Frustration only came. Not her.
Maria started rising up and down, frantic now for some sort of sign that what she was doing would indeed work. That there was some proof that, all this time, she could have slit her wrists or hung herself and it would have been better, wasn’t true.
She bucking up and down for about ten seconds when she felt something. Some sort of better feeling. Something good. Desperately, she clung to it, and sped up to increase…
Then it was over. He was done.
The entire ritual took about a minute and a half to complete.
Maria, devastated now, looked down at her lover for an answer, and only saw that he was grinning. That big, giant, evil grin that she had associated Gerald with.
She ran out of the room screaming.
**********
So this was how it was going to be?
So be it.
It only took forty-eight hours to reprogram him to hate Earth, but it was well worth it to see that grin imprinted forever.
Then she set the entire ship, and him, in sleep mode. And waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Then starved to death, not just because of nourishment, but also of hope.
There was nothing left.
