Well, I suppose I'd encourage fanfiction writers to explore other avenues of fiction writing when they feel they're ready for it. Fanfiction is a great stepping-stone for young authors to develop their style (since they're not risking their own ideas or characters), but it's not the only stepping-stone. Ideally, there comes a point where you should move on if you're serious about writing.
