TOTAL COST OF ENTIRE OUTFIT: £37
Most conventions and showing that people go to, if they're going as Magenta, they pick this one. Personally, if you don't want to be too much of a clone, I would suggest something else, such as the dinner scene costume or lab scene Magenta. Though it does mean you'll mumble because you'll have a thing over your mouth.
DRESS
Overall cost: 8.50
YOU NEED: A black dress.....an old white shirt or white material.....
1. Take the dress, ideally in a sale. You want one of the 'shirt dresses' in black (8) That way the cuffs and collar are already on there, you just need to attach material to them.
2. Remove the cuffs and collars from an old shirt (50p), and attach them to the black dress. The cuffs should be able to flap, though you might want to tack stich them at the top a little so they don't go everywhere.
3. Do the same sort of thing for the collar. But look at pictures - I didn't, so JUST my collar is white. The white actually goes down inside the dress further than mine, so be careful!
4. If you don't have a spare white shirt, get some old material instead, and sew this on top of the collar in the right shape. Careful with the edges.
WHITE APRON
Overall cost: 5
YOU NEED: White basic material .....frilly material/chiffon
1. Make the apron from the main material (3)- fairly easy - you need a rounded off square for the front panel, then two long straps that go from your waist, over your shoulders, and down to your back-waist.
2. Once the basic apron has been made, sew a strip, say 2 1/2 inches thick, of the white chiffon material (2) around the left, right, and bottom edge of the main panel.
Note - in the film, the apron is made of a very light material which, when made for us groupies of the film, can be a bit dodge for wearing out places. You're forever worried about it tearing. This is a durable version, near to the film.
WHITE "DOILY"
Overall cost: 3.00
YOU NEED: White material.....white frill material.....hair clips.....OR a paper doily.....
There's the easy version of quite literally buying a doily and hair-clipping it on. Or else...
1. Cut out a small circle of plain white material (3), say 4 inches in diameter.
2. Around this circle of material, sew a strip of the frill material, perhaps the same used to go round the apron above. Use the same material to create two strands of material coming out of the back of the piece.
SHEER STOCKINGS and SUSPENDERS
Overall cost: 8.50
YOU NEED: A black suspender belt .....black sheer stockings.....
iice easy one this, nothing technical really... just wear the stockings and suspenders as you would normally. The tops of the stockings should be visible in the opening of the front of the dress.
BLACK GRANNY BOOTS
Overall cost: 10
YOU NEED: Black boots ....a lucky find in a Charity shop.
Recently, there's been a burst of pointed boots on the market, including lace ups. Nab them in the sales - they'll be cheap once the weather gets warmer.
