BT 219 Documentary Critique Assignment #1

You are to select a documentary either approved by Eric or available from the resource center and complete a critique of the documentary. Your critique should be in essay form and include a reference to all of the elements of the documentary as discussed in class (from handout, and on the net). If the documentary had no narration, then you do not have to refer to this element. Refer to:…..

• Theme/statement/angle/core assertion – what did the doc say about the topic and what were some of the core ideas in it? Whose perspective was shown?

• Story Structure – how was the content organized and structured, what were the main parts and summarize what was covered.

• Progression/climax – did it progress well? Briefly explain. What was the climax? What did it end on?

• Visuals – were there any special qualities to the visuals? Did they add? Were there good solutions to the problem of showing something that may not be visual?

• Narration – male/female voice? Can you describe the voice quality? How important was the narration? If there was narration, provide a sample of 3 or four sentences to backup your points about it.

• Interviews – did they ask the right questions? Evaluate the interview.

• Sound/Music – was it appropriate? Did it add anything?

You may also wish to add comments on any aspect of the documentary that struck you as worth some comments ie. Balance, bias, recreations, research, etc. etc.

3-5 Minute Mini-Doc Assignment

Hand in To Rory March 8, 9

Write a proposal and and a treatment for your 3-5 mini-Doc (40%). This assignment is combined with your Single Camera class with Rory. The mark given in each course may vary. Each instructor will have a different set of criteria and will assign a mark for each course based on those criteria.

You must choose a topic from the list provided by Rory.

Follow the format for your proposal and treatment as discussed in class and provided to you in the notes.

Your proposal should not be more than one page.

Your treatment will be as long as it needs to be, depending on which of the treatment formats you use. As a rough guide, the number of pages in a treatment will rarely exceed the number of minutes allowed for your doc.

Each student is free to decide on the focus/angle/POV for the topic chosen.

In the case of a journalistic approach, BALANCE and journalistic ethic must shape the content.

You are to submit STORYBOARDS and a COVER PAGE and a split page script for ONE 30sec. Ad for ONE local business (not a major national chain). The AD budget is in the range of $650 - $1000. Contact a local business and explain to the manager/owner that you are a TV student and this is a class assignment. Ask the manager some of the key questions you would need to know when designing an ad for him/her... such as

1. what would you want an ad to accomplish for your business What would your advertising objectives be? [i.e. awareness of a spring sale, a service, new products, awareness of your firm and products, a new stronger image
2. who are your main competitors?
3. what gives you the competitive edge over your competitors that you would want your customers to know?
4. what is your target market [age, sex, income, social status]?
5. any other needs you would want an ad to address?

For the AD submit a cover page that includes the name of the business, the manager you talked to and when and where. A brief summary of the answers to the key points above. A brief description of the style of the AD if it is necessary and not obvious.

NB: Your AD should aim to be produce able on a local budget with local facilities and take into account production costs.
