The More important of Meena Kumari's films are Baiju Bawra, Parineeta,
Daera, harda, Saheb Biwi aur Gulam, Kaajal and Pakeezah.
1) Baiju Bawra (1952)- The best part of her career started
from Baiju Bawra and she was into lime light fast. So fast a rise and so
successful a career that she is supposed to be one of the best actresses
of Bollywood cinema. Baiju Bawra, she was Gauri and it was a musical love
story. Shw received a filmfare award for it in the first ever filmfare
awards function.
2) Parineeta (1953) -
3) Daera (1953) - Made by her husband Kamal Amrohi, Daera
is one of her important movies. It was one of the total of 4 movies made
by Kamal Amrohi in his life. Out of the four, two had Meena Kumari as the
central character.
4) Sharda - An unusual film, was taken up by Meena Kumari
after everybody had refused to take up such an unusual role. Meena Kumari
had almost won the Filmfare Award that year but Nargis won the award very
marginally for her performance in Mother India. However she did win the
journalist's choice award for this movie.
5) Saheb Biwi aur Gulam (1962) - A land mark of indian
cinema. A master piece by the master Guru Dutt and the star was Meena Kumari.
Unbeatable and dominant, she so so fluently flows into the role that it
is mesmerizing. The chhoti bahu's role portrayed by Meena Kumari is an
unforgettable performance and the role could not have been played better.
In fact this was one of the few best performances of the total indian cinema
till date. This was again a filmfare award winner. Interesting fact is
that in this year all the three filmfare award nominations went in her
name.
5) Kaajal (1965) - "Tora man darpan kahlaye". Was it about
Meena Kumari? This film also was another filmfare award winner by Meena
Kumari. Meena Kumari is great again.
6) Pakeezah (1971) - Another landmark of Indian Cinema
was conceptualized in 1953. But finished in 1971! Amazing. She grew
old with the movie. And this is visible in the movie. Pakeezah is the love
story of Meena KUmari with Kamal Amrohi, the Director of the film. Fact
is that Meena Kumari's life is inseparable from Pakeezah and the same melancholy
and sadness is visible in the film. Pakeezah is a movie which will not
be repeated.
Her personality and life is visible in the films Saheb, Biwi aur Gulam
and Pakeezah. So close are these films to her life, that it is difficult
to separate the person from the life. The same melancholy, sadness and
tearful face was ever present.
