I finally had a chance to see this in early March 2003 so I figured I better say a few words about this, too. First off, this isn't the kind of movie I'd watch otherwise. I felt like giving fake ID when I rented it, that is. It has James Belushi's whatever-his-name-was-again cop retiring and stumbling onto a crime in the making with his buddy, police dog Jerry Lee. He then ends up as the main suspect for the theft of the computer chips and ends up watched by the FBI agents Verner and Henry, played by Durand and Matthew Bennett.
Do I need to say I fastforwarded through most of the movie? Not that it was bad, have seen much worse, made in an expertly enough way, it's just that it's really not my kind of a movie. If KD hadn't done some scifi I probably wouldn't have heard of him yet, that is. Cop'n'dog movies and hockey movies? Oh yesh, my first choices, always. *slight smile*
Anyway. Bennett is relatively short and Durand is pretty tall so I presume the height difference played some part in the casting. Our FBI agents are meant to be ridiculed, that is. Bennett is usually very good in whatever he's in, too, but I can't say the parts were big enough to require any specific Shakesperean acting. KD is in about 4 scenes- fastforward 18 mins, then 11 mins, 2 mins, and then something around 56 minutes from the start was how I went about it pretty much... Not sure how long the trailers took so it's probably less if you buy it.
There's a trailer for this movie at IMDB by the way. The bit where Bennett says "Federal agents, you're under arrest" possibly has Kevin in the background, too, so good luck in trying to peer close enough to see him. He was to the left of Bennett in that scene, probably cut out of that pic, not sure.
The best thing about it? He looks brilliant in a suit. Black suit, switching between red and blue ties, shades half the time, but looking very smart whatever the case. There's a lovely "Yeah right, like we believe you" smile when he says "The dog heard something?" and we get a bit of moody agent otherwise, and the way he said "Clever. Diabolically clever" was very nice, too, but then I always liked his voice so no surprise there. |
There's also a cute bit where the agents have fallen asleep in their car, watching Dooley's (I had to check the name) house until dawn. Otherwise, well, they sit in the car and Jerry Lee bites a chunk of their tyre off from Verner's side and they drop down maybe 10 cm's, so he peeks out and says "The dog bit the tyre", very deadpan reactions all in all? It's kinda funny but it's hard to say anything conclusive about it. They have to dodge sprinklers and Verner's going "It's not worth the suit" (if I heard that right) to a very pissed off agent Henry, so you get the idea. They never get Dooley for anything, that is. So possibly the funniest bit comes from Verner's said-between-his-teeth "Breathe" when Dooley slips through their fingers once again toward the end. Deep breath in... aaand release. Not funny-funny but amusing in a way.
