"Great, now we can invite some new supervillains to the 'People Who Suck' party." -- Harper, 'Andromeda'
In other words, "Trust in the Harper, the Harper is Good." Seamus Harper whinges all the time (kinda like me at times) but manages to be likeable nevertheless. He's very smart and funny and though I try to steer clear of shorties and blonds and men who lust after every babe they run into... I still like him. Don't tell anyone. Especially not Harper, if we ever end up in that particular fictional world. Welcome to the fold, mister engineer person. |
Avon from Blake's 7 would be pretty unbearable as a person (to most people) as he's sarcastic, cynical, smarter-than-thou and increasingly paranoid as the series goes on. And I adored the character right from the start, my childhood role model and superhero. No wonder I turned out like this then. Seriously though, I probably liked Avon because I identified with him to a large degree. I'm a bit of a lone wolf, tend to be suspicious of people I don't know and it takes ages to really get to know me- and some people never will. I value intellect so I naturally appreciated that side of him, and have been known to slice people down to size with scathing remarks every now and then. Check the link if you want a fairly accurate description of the character and links to more information. Picture borrowed from that particular site.
The thing about Avon is that despite everything there's a lot underneath the cold facade, too. He shares his thoughts and emotions with very few (if anybody at all), apparently not even with Anna, the woman he loved, but they're there, buried deep underneath. He's very Vulcan, tho of course you need to know Star Trek or at least Mr Spock to get what I mean with that. |
ANNA: "Why do I never know what you're thinking, Avon?I always liked that quote, very true in many ways.
AVON: "I could never say it."
ANNA: "Not even to me?"
AVON: "Especially not to you." ("Rumours of Death")GAN:You're never involved, are you Avon? You ever cared for anyone?
VILA:Except yourself?
AVON:I have never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove that you care, or, indeed, why it should be necessary to prove it at all. ("Duel")
She's groovy. One of the few female characters out there that aren't too wimpy and soft (Deanna "I feel your pain" Troi anyone?) or otherwise just totally devoid of interest. Commander Susan Ivanova from Babylon 5, whose only problem really seemed to be the love affairs. Marcus loved her but she would hear none of it, which caused a lot of pain and tears when he ultimately sacrificed his life so that she would live. She wasn't rock hard or too macho, just not devastatingly traditionally feminine either, in a caring profession. |
IVANOVA: "I'll have you know I've been nothing but compassionate and understanding, I mean all you had to do was admit that I was right and you were wrong and everything would have been fine."Or am I just identifying again? I like her attitude (problem) and the wit, as with the others.DRAAL: "I like you. You're trouble."
IVANOVA: "Well thank you. That's the nicest thing anybody's said about me in days."
Strangely enough I also found John Crichton from Farscape growing on me when I finally saw some of the early second season episodes a while back. I never warmed to the character before and always preferred the intellectual semi-nemesis of his, Scorpius, and was never into the love-interest aspects with Aeryn Sun, but I think I actually like the guy in the end. Scorpius-fans will undoubtedly kill me, a terrible turncoat seemingly, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't appreciate S's brain and black croc-leather anymore. I just discovered what JC fans see in the man all of a sudden when I got a better picture of his overall personality. A very bizarre thing but quite nice, pleased I'd say. Plus Ben Browder is an excellent actor, definitely worth checking if you happen to catch him in anything. |
