HistoryFollowing a suggestion from Dr L K Gluckman, a meeting was held on 20 August 1964 to discuss the founding in Auckland of a Medical Historical society. A steering committee chaired by Dr E H Roche prepared a document defining the aims of the Society, which subsequently became affiliated with the Postgraduate Medical Committee of the University of Auckland.
Since 1964 the Society has met regularly. This year, the Society celebrates its 40th Anniversary. MeetingsMeetings are now held each month in the Ernest and Marion Davis Postgraduate Medical Centre in the grounds of the Auckland Hospital. Membership is open to all members of the health professions and any person with an interest in medical history. Guests are always welcome and members are encouraged to invite their friends along to these meetings. Format:The evenings begin at 6 pm with drinks followed by dinner at 6.30pm and papers at 7.30pm. The meetings usually finish by 9.30pm. Those who wish to attend the presentations only, can do so, and are cordially invited to join the others in the dining room for coffee at the end of dinner. A selection of treasures from the archives and rare books from the Ernest and Marion Davis and RACP Libraries will be displayed in the upstairs Reading Room from: 5.30 pm onwards.
