Physical vs. Logical Styles

This page will discuss the differences between using Physical and Logical style tags. The two style tags, generally accomplish the same results, but are used for different reasons. The main difference between the two tag styles is that Physical tags are used for character based web browsers, where Logical tags are used for text based browsers.

The two styles tags have their pros and cons. Physical tags are more commonly used today by web programmers, because the newer browser versions support them. They are also easier to interrupt by programmers performing maintenance. One of the disadvantages is that they are not supported by older versions of some web browsers. This translates into losing desired emphasis on a particular piece of text. Logical tags are recognized by the older versions of the web browsers, but are considered to be archaic and confusing by most programmers.

Which style tag is better to use? Time will tell, but as computers become less and less expensive, you will see many people upgrading their systems, which will inevitably result in receiving newer versions of the popular web browsers. This lends to the desire to lean toward the use of Physical style tags over Logical style tags.
