North America: USA

In USA traveling by car or airplane is very popular, so the railway has strong competitors and has to find its niche place in the transportation system. For long-distance passenger trains the Amtrak company is quite sucessful and offers a country-wide service with comfortable, speedy trains. Only the East coast line Washington- Philadelphia- New York - Boston is electrified. The freight trains are profitable, because they are very long, sometimes more than 2km long, the longest in the world.

The skyscrapers of Chicago IL in the background say good-bye to this Amtrak express leaving the underground Chicago Union station. The old engines type 413 were almost all replaced in 2002. Chicago is the one of the busiest stations in America and the central station connecting the East and West railway line system. Chicago has also many freight railway stations.
