Germany - West- SouthEast- line
This main line connects the federal States
Hessen, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Bavaria. The line from Frankfurt-
Heidelberg runs along the "Bergstrasse", where one can
see on the left side the hills of the Odenwald forest with some
castles. The line Frankfurt-Mannheim, however, runs mainly
through flat land.
The line Mannheim-Stuttgart is
newly build and was opened in 1990 for high- speed- service.
Compared to the old line with a lot of curves, it is much faster.
The line Heidelberg - Stuttgart runs along the Neckar river and
due to many curves it is much slower, but one of the most
beautiful lines in Germany. The city of Stuttgart is embedded in
a valley and the trains passes through tunnels to reach it from
the North or South. Between Stuttgart and Ulm the train is
climbing the Schwabische Alb through narrow curves near
Geislingen. It is one of the steepest slopes in German Railway
system, and freight trains need to be pulled from the back by
another locomotive. From Ulm to Muenchen the line runs through
the flat Bavarian land. From Rosenheim to Salzburg the Alpen
mountains can be seen in the South.

This is the old line, and only a few express trains use it,
although it is one of the most beautiful railroads in Germany.
The trains run most of the time along the Neckar river with its
vine yards, castles or apple trees. It was degenerated to a local
line, since the famous Rheingold Trans Europ Express (TEE) was
withdrawn in 1986. This train was running especially for
tourists. This picture shows this train in 1984-09-01 underneath
the Zwingenberg castle, one of the numerous medieval castles
remaining along the Nekar or Rhine river. .

Finally we reached Stuttgart, the city with 500.000 inhabitants
and one of the richest in Germnay. In 1975-07-16 this was one of
the last shunting services of the class 163 in front of the newly
build signal control box in Stuttgart Hbf.
