Other Robot Friends (and Props)!

WHen you are making a MST3K movie, you begin to amass a whole ton of neat props, all which are cool enough to take pictures of. So here they are.

Crowtus Roboticus Flamebroiled4us:

An absolute must for any movie. After all, Crow does have a tendency to blow himself up, now doesn't he? The coat is a shredded version of the one Colin Baker wore in the Doctor Who movie. The back story: Crow decides, like Docotr Who, that he wants to regenerate (kill an old body off and grow a new one, a nice little plot device enabling the lead actor to leave the show when he got sick of it), so he hooks himself up to a big generator and electrocutes himself. Nothing happens, until at the end of the skit he comes back, revived, an annoying Scot who plays the spoons just like in the movie (pictures of the annoying Scot costume and the special spoon-playing claw to come soon. Maybe.)

Parts List:
Head: Crown bowling pin, PVC sleeve, ping pong balls, pipe cleaners, cardboard maks shroud, 1/2 of a Crown bowling ball squashed for eye surround.
Body: Cardboard floralier trays, actual floralier lower grate for bottom of torso, pencil sharpener for shoulder, wooden arms, bits of Gypsy tubing for hands & interior of torso. Metal rod runs through the shoulder area for stability.
Inner Bits: string/elastic for mouth (run through central rod), air bladder and hose through mouth to create a puff of smoke (not added yet, but soon).

The Little Hexfield Servo:

A great little prop (about 1 foot tall, not counting puppeteering rod) that will be used to "fly by" in the Hexfield. The mouth works and the head rotates, so he's fully animated. I'll just post a parts list now; when my hands aren't tired of typing I'll see about going back and telling you all how the mouth works and general assembly instructions.

Parts List:
Head: metal jar lids (top lid and bottom cover), small plastic globe found at Michael's craft store, 2" PVC for head shaft, custom wooden lower jaw, 1/2 of a smll plastic endpiece for upper jaw.
Torso: My First Barrel of Monkeys (etoys gave the wrong dimensions on their site and I ended up ordering it by mistake a few years back), Altoids boxes for shoulders, 1/2" pipe and coils for arms, small doll hands, Lego pieces (including Technic bits) and small tubes for the engine block.
Hoverskirt: Swing arm lamp shroud (for a lamp like Crow's arms that you can find in any sotre. I just held the barrel up to it and it fit), foam insulation, and small vacuforms of matchbox cars (from my toy Vac-U-Former).
Inner Bits: 1/2" PVC, 2/4" PVC, fishing line, hinge for mouth, screw eye.

Dr. Forrester's Demonicus 9000:

Call me nostalgic, but I think Dr. Forrester needs a little robotic minion, especially in his "computer nerd" incarnation we're giving him in the movie. The design is the Succ-U-Bus form the wonderfully funny and challenging game Starship Titanic, but I'm extending the torso so it's more of a proper robot, and there a re a few asthetic touches here and there I'm changing. This little guy is in construction right now, but here's a partial parts list:

Head:(done for the most part) small floralier vase (mouth) with grating, bottom of a Crown Pin for the head, Space Claw (Timmy's hands and feet) ears, K'nex bits for eyes (large wheels) and trim.
Body: PVC arms w/ toy hands?, Airstram turn signal housing ("teardrop shape") for front/rear trim, large thermos for body?

Obviously, I'm still in the planning stage with him. But Mikey (Crow) will do a sort of "Jawa" voice for the little monkey-shaped guy. No pictures yet, and probably none for a bit. He will be the same green/gold colors.

The SOL desk and Movie Sign Panel:

Yes, I KNOW it's double exposed. So sue me. It's the SOL desk. A bit smaller, to fit into my garage. The rest of the set isn't done yet, but here's the parts list for the desk (it's also not fully painted yet).

For the Desk:

Plywood for the top (mine is 68" wide in back, 38" wide in front, and 30" deep.) and put trim around that.
The supports are 8" "Quik-tubes" made out of cardboard that are surprisingly strong if used in addition to other wood frames behind the various panels. 3 feet tall, each.
The sides are plywood, cut to fit, with plastic boxes stapled on in a recurring pattern.
The front is made up of a whole lot of junk, including: a pool filter, "fun-noodles", a crown pin, an old clock radio, some bottles and various containers, and two "monkeys" from a barrel of monkeys game (look closely at the tray in the upper left).

And the Console is made out of:
Video tape and 70's car radio mount (body)
2- 45 degree PVC elbows with colored lenses (individual lights- I'll install bulbs in them soon)
Gypsy tubing on the front for decoration, and a few other doodads (the technical term, of course!) on the back to round it out a bit.

Ther are a few other props that are in stages of being built, mostly Mad Scientist gizmos for the Nerd 13 set (including the huge, desk-like computer console), but they aren't done yet. So be sure to check back in a bit when I have a chance to send off another roll of film.
