featuring: PORKY IN WACKYLAND (1938) Porky ventures into Darkest Africa in search of the last Do-Do bird, and winds up in Wackyland, a surreal place where anything can happen: the sun comes up atop a human pyramid, the Warner Brothers shield comes zooming from the sky, and populated by creatures such as a three-headed 'Larry, Curly and Moe' beast. SHOCK CORRIDOR (1963) Johnny Barrett has been committed to an insane asylum for molesting his sister, Cathy. The doctors monitor his progress as he mingles with other mental patients. But Johnny's mind seems to be deteriorating. The problem is that Cathy is really Johnny's (stripper) girlfriend, not his sister. And Johnny is really a cocky newspaper reporter on a story, not a molester or a psycho. Johnny's goal is to investigate the murder of a patient named Sloan, witnessed by three disturbed patients who the police can't reach. Johnny figures that by working undercover on the inside he can find the truth & write a Pulitzer-prize story about the case. Little by little, Johnny Barrett works his way into their crazy world, looking for answers. And little by little, their world works its way into Johnny's mind. Johnny has to struggle for sanity while convincing all around him that he’s mad. The schematic script, with overtones of pulp fiction, and graphic compositions with the sparse, surreal qualities of good comic book art, combine in a nightmare vision of the 'normal' world. Director SAM FULLER is famed for violence and amoral anti-heroes, as well as his bold use of the camera. His visual style is particularly notable in the film's climax of gushing water as well as the close-up dream-sequences of Cathy walking on Johnny's chest, which has a magical quality. Both are impressive visual effects for a low budget 1960's film and thoroughly effective. The scene where Breck is locked in a room of nymphomaniacs is a crowning moment of unintentional comedy; emerging the next day covered in bandages. Prod: Leon Fromkess Sam Firks Production. Prod, dir, scr: SAMUEL FULLER. Photo: STANLEY CORTEZ. Mus: Paul Dunlop. Cast: PETER BRECK, Constance Towers, Gene Evans, James Best. 99 mins. NFVLS. |
