INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969)
This is a fast-moving collage of Magick elements drawn from Aleister Crowley without the narrative elements of ANGER's other films. Indirectly it is about the power of art to achieve a concentration of the imagination. The montage suggests the trance of music, drugs, possession by war, suicide and sexuality as 'the dynamic of imaginary initiation' invoking Lucifer, and features strobe-like homoerotic imagery with several shots of the ROLLING STONES in performance and an original synthesizer score by MICK JAGGER. Anger himself is the Magus (priest) - his face in black and gold. Cast: Bobby Beausoleil, KENNETH ANGER, Speed Hacker, Lenore Kandell, Anton LaVey, Van Leuvan. Mus: Mick Jagger. Prod/Dir: Kenneth Anger. 11 mins. NFVLS.
ROCK-A-BYE (1974)
Popular idols of the rock music scene – the ROLLING STONES, The Stampeders, Whiskey Howl, ALICE COOPER, MUDDY WATERS! A penetrating look at the whole pop music sub-culture and what keeps it alive, filmed in Canada, on and off-stage, and behind the scenes at record companies, radio broadcasting studios, and board rooms where hucksters plan the sales campaigns. The film includes personal interviews in which some of the stars explain what it's all about, and features ALICE COOPER hacking a doll to pieces on stage!Lamentably, the obscene language has been bleeped out. Prod Co: National Film Board of Canada. Prod:George Pearson. Dir: Jacques Bensimon. 52 mins. CAC.

LUCIFER RISING (1973)
Avant-garde filmmaker, KENNETH ANGER, draws on figures from Egyptian mythology to create a mysterious atmosphere for the rise of Lucifer. Part one of an epic work not yet completed. Entertaining, slow moving, insightful, and sometimes shocking fourth installment to the KENNETH ANGER short film collection; it possesses all these attributes, as well as being influential ON experimental directors of today. A lot of what ANGER was doing in INVOCATION OF MY DEMON BROTHER (1969), (film layers, fast edits, bizarre soundtracks) can be seen in most of the music videos on MTV; a characteristic that has driven parents - as well as teenagers - crazy. The primary source of these ideas came from the Acid Trip footage, extensively explicated in Tom Wolfe's lysergic-fused biographical novel, "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." Nevertheless, the idea caught on and ANGER utilized the technique to the fullest in DEMON BROTHER, counterweighted by an equivocal tape-loop supplied by MICK JAGGER. In the second film, LUCIFER RISING, ANGER had already developed his experimentation with edits and layers, this time presenting a more formalized run to the film. MARIANNE FAITHFULL makes an appearance in the film, as well as an assortment of '60s notables, which includes Manson-family member Bobby Beausoleil, who also wrote the film's score. Although possibly not ANGER'S best work, - SCORPIO RISING (1964) is the better - it still has many elements that turn some people on; ergo, a cult following. Dir: KENNETH ANGER. Mus: JIMMY PAGE. Cast: KENNETH ANGER (Lucifer), DONALD CAMMELL (Osiris), MARIANNE FAITHFULL (Lilith), Myriam Gibril. 24 mins. NFVLS.

A STONE IN THE BUSH (1970)
Scenes of the filming of the 1969 feature film NED KELLY (1970), starring MICK JAGGER, on location near Bungendore, N.S.W. Dir. Mike Glasheen. 25 mins. CAC.

The phenomenon of the rock concert is explored in this film of the ROLLING STONES concert in Hyde Park, London 1969, a few days after the death of Brian Jones. Includes interviews and behind-the-scenes footage. Photographed by Bill Brayne, Michael Dudds and Brian Grainger. Prod Co: Granada Television. 30 mins. CAC.
