This website is devoted to THE HUNGER the 1983 MGM film starring David Bowie, Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon. Although slated on its original release - and overshadowed by Bowie's other 1983 film, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence - THE HUNGER has gone on to become a cult film for many reasons. It was one of the first 'modern vampire' films, the scenes between Sarandon and Deneuve have made it a favourite amongst lesbian filmgoers (it was shown as part of a Lesbian Movie Night in New York City in October 1995). It also has a great soundtrack with music by Bauhaus, a similar feel to Paul Schrader's Cat People (1982) an erotic horror film with a Bowie title theme. Bowie and Deneuve make a very elegant pair of vampires, their roles capitalising on Deneuve's ice queen persona of her early films Repulsion and Belle de Jour, whilst Bowie has always been adept at putting across an otherworldly, detached persona. He brings a real sadness to the role as he begins his dramatic ageing process. Tony Scott's 'MTV' style of direction - billowing sheets and curtains, dry ice, artificial light - comes in for a lot of stick but, like it or not, it's a style he pioneered.

Tony Scott has made two seasons of a TV series called The Hunger. It only shares its title with the film of the same name, in fact it's closer to something like the Red Shoe Diaries. However, David Bowie introduced the episodes in the second season (Terence Stamp did the honours in the first season) and starred in the first episode of the season - we will of course be covering this here too.

This website is basically divided into three sections...
