Having grown up studying the illustrations of artist Gustave Dore, in particular his illustrations of Dante's Inferno, Harryhausen played aroudn with the idea of adapting the tale to film. However, the amount of nudity that would be required for such a project killed any further plans. If it had been produced, the film would have included a monstrously gigantic Lucifer, half-embedded in ice.
