This is the mock 'Rolling Stone' cover that is set to appear in the film. Lestat encounters this magazine in his LA mansion. By this stage, Lestat has risen to worldwide stardom as the lead singer of Satan's Night Out, and he is rather perplexed by an article he finds about himself in this edition... It is an intriguing image. Lestat is in full 'rock video' make-up, hence his face being painted entirely gold.
This design of this cover is really quite clever! There are several references to the film within the text, and I'm sure fans of the film and novels may have also noticed these! Perhaps they are not supposed to be analysed like this but, hey, it's fun! Here are my observations:
Love Bites - The Latest
"To Die For" Fashion Accessory
A vampiric pun. The double meaning of the words
is rather obvious - Love 'bites' and it's 'to die for'.
Air Guitar - It's Not
Funny Anymore!
This is probably related to the
magazine labelling Lestat a 'Metal God'. When Lestat reads the article, he is perplexed by
the term 'Metal God'. Maudy and James are clearly annoyed by the reference. They insist
they are not 'head-bangers'. When Lestat asks what they mean, Maudy and James "immediately
start throwing their hair up and down and playing air guitar like
a heavy metal act."
Tour Disaster -
Belheath's World Tour Finishes On A Downer!
Sound familiar? This fictitious band's
'tour' is a 'disaster'. And Lestat's concert finishes with disaster! This headline
predicts the outcome of Lestat's first and only live performance with Satan's Night Out.
Plus Our Sealed
Section... Lestat - Man or Beast?
The main headline, and obviously about
the rumours of Lestat's identity! Is he human, or isn't he? Also, notice how it is a
sealed section, perhaps indicating that there is something to hide, or alternatively,
something that should not be revealed...?
Finally...
Notice that this is Issue
666?!
And upside down, the price ($9.99) is also familiar...
As Pandora so coyly says in the film, "Lestat is quite the devil." :)
