Hugh's
parents are both English, and his four older siblings were born here. His
dad is an accountant. He was born and bred in Sydney, and says Australia
is his base. However, we in Britain feel if we can have Greg Rudseski, we
can have Hugh Jackman as well!!
Hugh attended Knox Grammar in Wahroonga NSW - (interestingly enough also
attended by Adam Garcia) - and left as School Captain
He majored in Journalism at University of Technology, Sydney but gave up
being a journalist for the stage. What a wise move
He turned down a part in Neighbours to study at the Western Australian
Academy of Performing Arts
He met his wife, the actress and director Deborra-Lee Furness on his first
television acting job in Corelli - the acclaimed ABC prison drama in which
she played the title role
His mentor is Oklahoma! director Trevor Nunn of whom he says " If he
asked me to do Cinderella The Pantomime, I'd probably drop everything to
do it"
He sang the National Anthem in front of 100,000 people at the Melbourne
Cricket ground before the 1998 Blediscoe Cup
Apart from his Olivier Award nomination for
Oklahoma! Hugh has won a Variety Club stage actor award and two Mo awards,
and been nominated for several more, including, in June 1999, Australian
Cultural Ambassador! (like Les Patterson?). In summer 99 he was named
Australian Star of the Year
His talents include playing the piano, he's learning the guitar and he can
juggle 5 balls in the air at once. he plays golf, goes windsurfing, and
practises Transcendental Meditation
His favourite drink is gin and tonic.
He recently signed to a major Hollywood agent and has a passion to move
into films for a while, after a long stint on the musical stage.
His hair isn't really curly and had to be regularly permed to play the
role in Oklahoma! At the end of the run he was planning on having
his hair cut really short as the chemicals have damaged it so badly
Whilst playing Gaston in Beauty and the Beast he was once laughing so much
he peed himself on stage!
Hugh has been named Most Fashionable Man in Australia for 1999
Hugh's most recent films were Paperback Hero, released in Oz in March
1999, UK Septemeber 1999, and Erskineville Kings, out in Oz in September
1999 (see Silver Screen). Plus appearing in the video of Oklahoma! -
released Autumn 1999
He has done several stints as a TV presenter and made a series called Hugh
Jackman's West End while he was here, which was broadcast in Oz |
