Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums was one of my favorite films of last year. So when I heard that The Criterion Collection would be doing a two-disc special edition of the film I came as close to wetting myself as I've come since the age of eight. The film itself is as close to perfect as I can recall. Its impeccable writing goes hand in hand with its incredible cast. Visually the movie combines appealing colors with symmetry that brings the film to an even higher level. And I'd just like to take a second to mention the superb soundtrack that takes songs from some of my favorite artists like Nick Drake, Van Morrison, The Ramones, & Paul Simon to name a few, and combines them with music from composer Mark Mothersbaugh, whom you may remember from the group Devo. The transfer on the DVD carries every aspect of the film perfectly. The special features that come along with it are just odd and quirky enough to fit the film perfectly. A great example would be the segment from The Peter Bradley Show which so realistic to where I'm not sure whether it is an actual show or if it was just staged. It is a 15 min. segment of the possibly fiction character Peter Bradley interviewing actors from the film who had one line to no dialoged at all. One more of the many features that I found especially entertaining was the feature in the art section about the painting Bad Root and how it ended up in the film. I realize that this review may have come across so positive that you may think Wes Anderson is personally felating me right now, but there was one feature in this DVD that I found less than stellar. And that was the Director's commentary done solely by Wes himself where he discuses the movie with almost no interesting information other than what French films inspired certain aspects of the film. |
